To Turn You On Lyrics

I could show you in a word
if I wanted to
a window on the world
with a lovely view
from close up inside a single room
with an open book aside
like you read in school.

it's so easy, believe me
when you need fun
I'd do anything to turn you on
anything to turn you on.

is it raining in New York
down 5th Ave?
and off Broadway after dark
you love the lights don't you?
I could walk you through the park
if you're feeling blue
or whatever

spring, summer, whenever
winter through Fall,
I'd do anything to turn you on
anything to turn you on.

I could leave you as you were
if I wanted to
then I wonder is it fair
now you're on your own?
who cares about you?

except me, God help me
when things go wrong.
I'd do anything to turn you on
must phone me, you know me
when things go wrong
I'd do anything to turn you on.

It's a man who is fond of and feels sorry for a woman, but doesn't love her.

She is less well equipped emotionally than him, or suffers depression and his wanting to turn her on is maybe sexual but more likely his efforts to bring her out of her funk via a variety of experiences.

Feeling responsible for her and convinced that no one else will care for her, he can't bring himself to cut her off, so there is an egotism in his concern.

Wow, I think you totally Nailed It with your description of this amazing song's meaning.

Somehow this song never felt sexual to me even though it has the word "Turn You On". I feel the Narrator is trying to lift her up through carious experiences.

Great tune

Thanks, I hope I caught it's meaning. It is indeed a great song with brilliant guitar work.

I feel like the lyrics of this song feel to me not that its a depressed woman who hes scared of leaving, but rather this man is manipulating a girl to stay with him. “You must phone me” and the desperation of other lyrics feel like an act of control, and “now youre on your own, who cares about you... Except me” feels very much like the way a manipulative parter would keep you with them, isolating you from your friends and family, keeping you dependent on them, and scaring them into thinking if they leave you you have no one else. maybe since Ive been in an emotionally abusive relationship before I have a different view point, but curious to see if anyone else sees it similar to me?

My Interpretation

@itsnotstanley The lyrics could well imply manipulation rather than concern/pity - the "if I wanted to" lyric sounds as if the man is callous rather than concerned.

A large part of me wants the song not to be sinister though - the guitar is divine :-)
