I can say firmly, none of them knew the colour of the sky.

• Nobody else can see the path ahead of them other than him, and have lost faith because of it, as the sky is clouded and nobody can see the true colour of it for the clouds (dark, pitch). They believe that the path is dark and daunting and not worth the risk.

Imagine if we were lost at sea, not a single lip would move to reveal the stars to me.

• If he and his friends were lost at sea, because of their lack of faith in such a dire situation they would not open their mouths to assist in chartering a course with the assistance of the stars (which they could see in the night's sky, Celestial Navigation).

I am so lost amongst a sea of desperation that these milky clouds fail to shine their light on the path I know I’m meant to take.

• He is so lost in his desperation, unable to get the assistance of those who do not believe in him, that even the clouds will not open to shine through some light on where his path should lead. The path that he knows he is supposed to take, but only he has faith in.

• Because of their lack of faith and 'loose lips', his friends allowed their competition/enemies into the singer's 'path' (that he knew to take) that none of them believed in. The bows were filled with 'lies' because they were unfaithful to the singer and may have literally lied to him about this (out of pure despair of making the mistake or otherwise). The 'stern' eventually broke in two and it caused damage to the singer's ship, the only thing that could take him along his path - Without his friends being faithful to him, and his 'ship' (which could signify a few things) he was left alone without anything to hold onto to take him down his path (if the ship had sunk, and there was no driftwood).

• Again, his friends still lack faith. Nobody knew where his path was leading, how it would happen, or even why he had to go along this path. They did not want to hear the singer's thoughts and thought he was absurd - therefore he states 'cement my thoughts to my ankles and cast me overboard' - The liar, the wretch and the failed. Because of the situation, he had lost his friends, and now he was labelled the 'liar', 'wretch' and a 'failure' because their ship may not have sunk - but they blame their failures along the path on the singer's ideals - the path he 'knew' he was supposed to take eventually lead them to their demise, or near to it, so he was cast aboard and outcast.

They could never see the true colour of the sky…wistful and lonely, caught on my own; my sky is the only, my sky, oh so lonely.

• They would never know the true path he was supposed to take (the true colour of the sky), the 'thoughts' in his mind and the path he knew he had to take. Because they had no faith in him, they would not help him charter his course and alone in his thoughts that eventually led them down the wrong path and almost sunk the 'ship', they cast him aboard and he no longer has anyone alongside him.

I think this song is about a girl that loosely says I love you without meaning it, breaking up with a guy and the guy being depressed about it.
