Duet Lyrics

Oh Lover, hold on
'til i come back again
for these arms are growin' tired,
and my tales are wearing thin

If you're patient I will surprise
When you wake up I'll have come

All the anger will settle down
and we'll go do all the things we should have done

Yes I remember what we said
as we lay down to bed
I'll be here if you will only come back home

Oh lover, i'm lost
because the road I've chosen beckons me away

Oh lover, don't you roam
now I'm fighting words I never thought I'd say

But I remember what we said
as we lay down to bed
I'll forgive you oh
if you just come back home

Mmmm..

Oh lover, I'm old
You'll be out there and be thinking just of me

And I will find you down the road
and will return back home to where we're meant to be

Cause I remember what we said
as we lay down to bed
we'll be back soon as we make history

Quickly becoming my favorite song from her latest album. Reminiscent of Goethe's work. I love how this song is a call to your loved one to not forget, not to leave and move on. Beautiful and unrequited love.

Duet is about two lovers who love each other so much, but have to part because they both have their own career to pursue. In order not to become each other's fetter in the way of pursuing their dreams, they decide to separate temporarily, and once they fulfill their dreams, they'll come back home to finish their mutual dream: to love each other and be together happily ever after, which is "the things we should have done." I love how her and Ray LaMontagne's voice melt into each other. I'm agreeing with maivis on this one.

So sad yet beautiful.

This is a beautiful song. I have it on at least a dozen of my playlists. It always makes me think the one special guy I let get away.

This song sounds like it's about a couple drifting apart after a huge fight. The lyrics are as if Rachael and Ray are talking to each other as this couple. They were devastated after leaving each other and just hoping that the other person would come back and be the first one to a apologize. The last part of the song where they come in with the harmony kinda gives me the impression that "the anger has settled down" and they are coming back to each other. It is a little like that moment where people realize that their relationship is more important than their ego and decide to let the other person win. In this case, both of them felt that way.
