I think Matt is talking about not just one song, but all of them. He's asking himself if people actually listen to the lyrics and appreciate them, or if they just like a certain song because of the beat/guitars/etc. He's saying a song wouldn't be a song without the lyrics. Words complete songs and give them meaning, and he's wondering if other people realize this. He's also saying that there can't just be random words put to a beat, the lyrics actually have to make sense. They have to be about something meaningful.
