The Summer Lyrics
If I could bottle up the sea breeze I would take it over to your house
And pour it loose through your garden
So the hinges on your windows would rust and colour
Like the boats pulled up on the sand for the summer
And your sweet clean clothes would go stiff on the line
And there’d be sand in your pockets and nothing on your mind
But every year it gets a little bit harder
To get back to the feeling of when we were fifteen
And we could jump in the river upstream
And let the current carry us to the beginning where
The river met the sea again
And all our days were a sun-drenched haze
While the salt spray crusted on the window panes
We should be living like we lived that summer
I wanna live like we live in the summer
And I’ll remember that summer as the right one
The storms made the pavement steam like a kettle
And our first goodbye always seemed like hours
In the car park in between my house and yours
And if the summer holds a song we might sing forever
Then the winter holds a bite we’d never felt before
But time is like the ocean
You can only hold a little in your hands
So swim before we’re broken
Before our bones become
Black coral on the sand
And pour it loose through your garden
So the hinges on your windows would rust and colour
Like the boats pulled up on the sand for the summer
And your sweet clean clothes would go stiff on the line
And there’d be sand in your pockets and nothing on your mind
To get back to the feeling of when we were fifteen
And we could jump in the river upstream
And let the current carry us to the beginning where
The river met the sea again
And all our days were a sun-drenched haze
While the salt spray crusted on the window panes

So swim before we’re broken
Before our bones become
Black coral on the sand

josh pyke has great imagery in his lyricism and this song is no exception. i love the part where he sings.. 'But time is like the ocean You can only hold a little in your hands So swim before we’re broken Before our bones become Black coral on the sand'
I think that part rounds up the whole point of the song. Life is short and we should take it one day at a time and enjoy it. Young love is the main subject matter. I think he is reflecting and being nostalgic about his past feelings not necessarily about a person but about a time.
i just created this account coz im pretty sure i know what this song is about. ive met josh pyke and he told me about his first love it was with a girl during the summer holidays at a beach destination where they were both holidaying
the park11 person is exactly right i would think
also i just want to add that josh pyke is the most gifted lyricist i have ever encountered and he's also a genuinely nice guy his lyrics are more profound than most poetry which i think is something to be revered considering the fact that so many of the "songs" today have ridiculous repeitive lyrics such as " gimme gimme more gimme more". yuck
Josh Pyke's lyrics are truly amazing, i find myself getting lost in a trance whenever i listen to his music.

Absolutely incredible song. Have listened to it probably a hundred times over the last week, just from first getting the album.
I love the story it conveys... to me it sounds like the teenagers who met at the holiday homes their respective families visited every year. And the summer represents their relationship because that's the only time they're together. "The winter holds a bite we'd never felt before" is about how they're apart when they return to their normal lives after the summer.
I agree with both park11 and circa_survive_green. I just got this album and I'm in love with this song. I especially love the starting verse of this song. I loooove him. He's a lyric genius.

beautiful song, so pretty and sublime. the images that the song gives are just so vivid.
'But time is like the ocean You can only hold a little in your hands'
I completely agree with onetime11, I have never come across a more gifted lyricist. Heaps of artists out write the most stupid lyrics (like said above) or they dont even write their own lyrics! Whats the point to that - its like their singing about someone elses experiences/thoughts/dreams. How is a song supposed to be powerful, if the person singing it cant even relate to what theyre singing?? Josh pyke on the other hand is a genius. "But time is like the ocean, you can only hold a little in your hands" -- how many ppl can write lyrics like that? I dont think he gets enough credit for his gift. Has anyone seen his music videos?? Everything about him is just so creative and clever
So beautiful. I think it might just be about missing being able to feel youthful and carefree.
he wrote about patonga, on the NSW central coast. he used to go there as a child. i cant remember if he said whether or not the part about the girl was true but the inspiration (atleast) for the setting was drawn from patonga
Has anyone tried to actually sing this song? It is ridiculous. There is hardly any room at all in the verses to take a breath.
Lol I have, and I went alright :P
Lol I have, and I went alright :P
I'm pretty sure there's a bit of over interpretation happening here.
I think this is just a very simple song of nostalgic quality. It's Pyke's memories of being a kid, I mean, we've all been there, think about it, the summer, colourful, going to the beach, hanging out with friends. This song is brilliant (in my opinion) in that it makes you feel very similar feelings of playing in the river with friends and just being young, youthful, happy and free.
The only real message (if there is one) is in the chorus "We should be living like we lived that summer I wanna live like we live in the summer" He laments the fact that this time is over.
I suppose we can also see a relationship related meaning in this song. Perhaps a less self-interested approach in that he may have written this song for a friend who has stopped seeing the beauty of the world and in turn Pyke has created this piece of poetry to show that it's not all bad, a 'remember the good times' song.
Of course, I think this song will mean something different to everyone, Pyke has a way of writing music which evokes memories from all our lives regardless of age and gender which leads me to believe that there can be no one meaning for this song*.
*I think you'd be hard pressed to find a song that differs from that statement though.
