Saintly Rows (Oh Oh) Lyrics

Paranoia posed in saintly rows outside my windows
Cacophonous caws, bacterial ponds flap
Pavement moans

Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh

Caustic alarmed cavernous psalms
They swing from your lips then tie your tongue up like you asked them to
Out come the gaunt ghosts of your thoughts
They're shrieking in prose and breathing rhymelessness archaic gloom
Cover your mouth, sound trickles down and drips from your chin
Drooling vibrations in an empty room

There just pull your eyelids down they're begging for your sleep
Find yourself in white stairwell a trembling voice now speaks
Whirring back and forth from firework to figure eight
Now your trembling hands don't seem so hard to make behave

Paranoia posed in saintly rows outside my windows
Single filed piled while flashing smiles network imposed

Dumbstruck and shoved oxygen snuffed then beg for embrace
Passion like cancer has a wandering eye
Caskets for hands bury your plans right next to your songs
When t-shirt vending is how you spend your time
Out come the gaunt ghosts of your thoughts
They're shrieking in prose and breathing rhymelessness archaic gloom
Cover your mouth, sound trickles down and drips from your chin
Drooling vibrations in an empty room

There, just pull your eyelids down they're begging for some sleep
Find yourself in white stairwell a trembling voice now speaks
Whirring back and forth from firework to figure eight
Now your trembling hands don't seem so hard to make behave

Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh

Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh

Caustic alarmed cavernous psalms they swing from your lips
Then tie your tongue up like you asked them to

Out come the gaunt ghosts of your thoughts
They''re shrieking in prose and breathing rhymlessness archaic gloom

This song is about feeling intimidated by the austerity of the church and its traditions. "Drooling vibrations in an empty room" suggests that the singer feels that even though everyone in the church is singing or chanting, that their is no meaning in it for them, and their worship is almost mechanical. "paranoia posed in saintly rows" is the idea that the congregation worships out of fear instead of passion.

I'm a Christian, have been my whole life, and I hate that there are so many churches that make people so intimidated like this. It's so true how some people make there worship mechanical and meaningless, to themselves and to others. People need to make worship their own and not just pointless words you say because they're in the book or up on the screen. And once they get out those doors, they act like they've never been to church a day in their lives. I hope no one stumbles upon these Christians and believes we're all like that... Some people come to church because they think they should or because it's routine, but they've really lost their connection with God...

It's a good song, though...

Yup. Definitely about Ian's disillusionment with the church. He actually co-founded a Christian rap-metal band (Justifide) back in the late 90s, but quit before they got signed.

It's about antidepressants.

Everyone is dumb here but me.

This song isn't about Christianity at all.

It's about Elliot Smith and his suicide:

-"Whirring back and forth from firework to figure eight" = References Elliott Smith's first and last albums Roman Candle and Figure Eight.

-Paranoia = There is nothing more paranoid than refusing to eat anything but ice cream and to think that there are white vans from your record label following you and trying to "get" you.

-The chorus shows him in heaven and refers to his "trembling hands" being calmed. -The last verse says he has "caskets for hands". =These refer to his suicide.

Beyond that the song is about a singer who makes extremely sad music. This song is a tribute to one of the greatest songwriters of our generation, and it is wasted on you FOOLS.

Seems like a pretty tenuous connection, were it not for the oddly specific album title references. Still, I think an indictment of the church is a valid interpretation.

Oh, and good job on being a condescending prick.

the only way you can be wrong about interpreting lyrics is if you are an arrogant jerk while doing it. dude you make one connection with the album titles (one isn't even the actual album title...) something about paranoia (cause elliott smith was definitely the only person on the planet with paranoia...???) and then barely connect the fact that he is dead with the lyrics about casket hands...you do realize funerals also happen in churches, in which caskets for hands can also be applied? im not saying your wrong, because its an interesting interpretation but everyone elses' interpretations CLEARLY (i...

"everyone is dumb here but me" I've never seen a more appropriately backed up sentence. I'm kind of surprised this guy has Elliot Smith as an inspiration, as awesome as it is I couldn't hear it in his music until now.
