You and I Lyrics

Don't you worry, there my honey
We may not have any money
But we've got our love to pay the bills
Maybe I think you're cute and funny
Maybe I want to do what bunnies do with you
If you know what I mean

Oh, let's get rich and buy our parents homes in the south of France
Let's get rich and give everybody nice sweaters and teach them how to dance
Let's get rich and build a house on a mountaintop
Making everybody look like ants from way up there,
You and I, you and I

Well you might be a bit confused
And you might be a little bit bruised
But, baby how we spoon like no one else
So I will help you read those books
If you will soothe my worried looks
And we will put the lonesome on the shelf

Oh, let's get rich and buy our parents homes in the south of France
Let's get rich and give everybody nice sweaters and teach them how to dance
Let's get rich and build a house on a mountaintop
Making everybody look like ants from way up there,
You and I, you and I

Oh, let's get rich and buy our parents homes in the south of France
Let's get rich and give everybody nice sweaters and teach them how to dance
Let's get rich and build a house on a mountaintop
Making everybody look like ants from way up there,
You and I, you and I

Bunnies have sex.

no, really?

They are so in love.

She says "we've got our love to pay the bills," and they have so much love that if their love really was money, they could buy everything described in the song. The sweaters, the luxury homes for their parents, a mountain-top house.

But, all of that stuff doesn't matter because all they need is each other (you and I). They're willing to spend any money they have on things like sweaters for everyone else and homes for their parents because everyone else is an insignificant "ant."

Basically, they're in a magical fantasy world together because they are high on love. When more voices join in the last time the chorus repeats, I also imagine it to be part of their fantasy. The love between just the two of them is so powerful it feels like a huge group of people is joining them.

My Interpretation

So catchy and short but sweet.

I love this song, but I always wonder if there was supposed to be a double meaning in "Oh, let's get rich and buy our parents homes in the south of France"

Does she mean a) Let's buy our parents' homes - as in buy the houses FROM our parents or b) Let's buy our parents homes - as in buy houses FOR our parents.

Probably b (I don't think Ingrid is so cold-hearted), but if you just listen to the song, you actually hear two different meanings. I guess that means you can either do good or bad with your money. Clever play on the apostrophe, Ingrid!

I just discovered how great lyrics this girl writes, and this song in particular gives me a feeling of happines. Can´t stop smiling. For me is about not letting everyday things ruin your life. It´s ok to dream even if those dreams are silly, childish, frivolous, irrational or even stupid. I love the part that says: "Let's get rich and give everybody nice sweaters and teach them how to dance" For me that means that what really matters in life are the simpler things. Love the song!!!

At Bonnaroo this summer, she called it her "care bear shitting out skittles" song. She is hilarious.
