I think this song is about maybe a fling he had with someone or maybe even the aftermath of a relationship where she left him for someone else. Or he was in love with someone, like a crush and watched her get swept away by someone else.

it's about a man whose girlfriend left him for another man. he is very bitter and saddened by it. he is trying to jab at her were little things about their love that he thinks might get to her--"I hope in your dreams that he loves your eyes like i did." perhaps the "my friend" is yet another jab, as when the girl left him she may have said, "we should just be friends." so, by using it here, he is using it bitterly. by telling her to "just say goodnight," he's saying he wants her to leave and get out of his life because she hurt him.
