Das Lied Der Deutschen Lyrics

Deutschland, Deutschland uber alles,
Uber alles in der Welt,
Wenn es stets zum Schutz und Trutze
Bruderlich zusammenhalt;
Von der Maas bis an die Memel,
Von der Etsch bis an den Belt:
Deutschland, Deutschland uber alles,
Uber alles in der Welt!
Deutschland, Deutschland uber alles,
Uber alles in der Welt.

Deutsche Frauen, deutsche Treue,
Deutscher Wein und deutscher Sang
Sollen in der Welt behalten
Ihren alten, schonen Klang,
Uns zu edler Tat begeistern
Unser ganzes Leben lang:
Deutsche Frauen, deutsche Treue,
Deutscher Wein und deutscher Sang!
Deutsche Frauen, deutsche Treue,
Deutscher Wein und deutscher Sang!

Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit
Fur das deutsche Vaterland!
Danach la?t uns alle streben
Bruderlich mit Herz und Hand!
Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit
Sind des Gluckes Unterpfand:
Bluh' im Glanze dieses Gluckes,
Bluhe, deutsches Vaterland!
Bluh' im Glanze dieses Gluckes,
Bluhe, deutsches Vaterland!

I know hardly any German, but I do know this is the old version of the German national anthem. After that bit of unpleasantness in the 1940s the first stanza was dropped because it sounded triumphalist - actually, it doesn't mean "Germany rules OK", it's more "I love Germany above everything else", but people were feeling a bit sensitive. Nico sings the banned verse; &, what's more, she sang it in Berlin, accompanied by John Cale, & damn near started a riot! You can't fault her courage. Strange woman, gorgeous voice. This is sung like a dirge & is just a joy to listen to, even if (like me) you can't understand a word. It seems to be made up entirely of cliches - freedom, heart & hand, fatherland, la la la - but the way she sings it does kind of make you want to go right out there & invade Poland...

I've heard that she had Nazi sympathies. But growing up in what circumstances she did and such, she was always a little...messed up? I dunno, she had a alot of issues.

nazi sympathies? is this true?

@ambriel no her Father was killed by nazis so very doubtful ... i think this was just Nico being punk before punk almost tongue in cheek

In fact, things are not so clear. I have read several comments like "The German musician Nico sometimes performed the national anthem at concerts and dedicated it to militant Andreas Baader, leader of the Red Army Faction.[31] She included a version of "Das Lied der Deutschen" on her 1974 album The End..." Anyway, Nico's version is really wonderful, like so many of her songs. Even in 2018.
