The Turning Lyrics

Eyes over the city
rise up from your soul
They hang over the streets at night
Brought on by the cold

We live with the numbers
Mining a dream for the same old song
What hope for the turning
If everything you know is wrong

So come on, shake your rag doll, baby
Before you change your mind
Then come on, when the rapture takes me
Be the fallen angel by my side

If you carry the lantern
I'll carry you home
You search for the disappeared
I'll bury the cold

Yours is a messiah
Mine is a dream and it won't be long
No hope for the journey
If no-one ever sees the dawn

So come on, shake your rag doll, baby
Before you change your mind
Then come on, when the rapture takes me
Will you be by my side?
Then come on, when the rapture takes me
Be the fallen angel by my side

So come on, shake your rag doll, baby
Before you change your mind
Then come on, when the rapture takes me
Will you be by my side?

Hey come on, shake your rag doll, baby
Before you change your mind
Then come on, when the rapture takes me
Be the fallen angel by my side

No one has really commented on what the lyrics really mean...

In my opinion, the song is all about having your lover/best friend by your side in times of trouble. Forget about your sins, their sins... forget everything. The only thing that matters is that you're with the person you should be with and in the end everything will be alright (a theme in so many Oasis songs).

Easily the best off one of their greatest albums conceptually, lyrically and musically! Looking forward to the new experimental oasis..

Great tune, btw according to an article in Q magazine its 'shake your reptile' not rag-doll. not that makes much more sense to me.

my interpreation is this song is about going along with the way the world is. but he wants a turning/apocalypse to change it all. until that time "Before you change your mind" keep on shaking your reptile and going a long with it. and when something changes then stand by his side.

grat tune! new album is so good.

this is one of the best in my opinion, the tune reminds me of a stone roses song which i cant exactly remember which one, maybe 'what the world is waiting for'?... anyway, great tune!!

according to the NME pack thing were you can learn to play a few of these new tunes, it is in fact "shake your rag-doll baby" - it certainly sounds like rag doll. Perhaps the lyrics in the album booklet will tell the truest tale. i got a bootleg 3 weeks ago... love this album. dw, i'll buy a copy when its released!

The question remains: Reptile or Rag-doll? It sounds like reptile to me.

anyway, it's just an amazing song.

It's shake yer ragdoll, as in shake yer ass. Those guys who misunderstood the lyrics & then used their misunderstood lyrics in their reviews for all the world to see must be feeling pretty dumb right now.

I think the outro of the song is tribute to The Beatles's "Dear Prudence", that's just my first impression. Oasis rules, and Noel is still my fuckin' music god!

It is "Shake your rag-doll", I have the songbook that came with the Special Edition right here and it says that.

Also pretty awesome song. I love the new album, it definately has a different sound than they usually have had in the past.
