I did my best to notice
When the call came down the line
Up to the platform of surrender
I was brought, but I was kind
And sometimes I get nervous
When I see an open door
Close your eyes, clear your heart
Cut the cord

Are we human
Or are we dancer?
My sign is vital
My hands are cold
And I'm on my knees
Looking for the answer
Are we human
Or are we dancer?

Pay my respects to grace and virtue
Send my condolences to good
Give my regards to soul and romance
They always did the best they could
And so long to devotion
You taught me everything I know
Wave goodbye, wish me well
You've gotta let me go

Are we human
Or are we dancer?
My sign is vital
My hands are cold
And I'm on my knees
Looking for the answer
Are we human
Or are we dancer?

Will your system be alright
When you dream of home tonight?
There is no message we're receiving
Let me know, is your heart still beating?

Are we human
Or are we dancer?
My sign is vital
My hands are cold
And I'm on my knees
Looking for the answer

You've gotta let me know

Are we human
Or are we dancer?
My sign is vital
My hands are cold
And I'm on my knees
Looking for the answer
Are we human
Or are we dancer?

Are we human
Or are we dancer?
Are we human
Or are we dancer?

    General Comment

Here's my line-by-line interpretation of the lyrics.

First verse - I have no idea what is going on.

Second verse - The lines "And sometimes I get nervous / When I see an open door" imply some kind of fear of freedom. 'Nervous' could also mean anxious or agitated, as though the open door elicits a yearning for freedom for the singer which results in a state of nervous excitement. The next lines, "Close your eyes, clear your heart / Cut the cord", imply some kind of ending or transition from one stage to the next. The word 'cord' may signify either a connection or a restriction. The singer is asking the unknown listener to find a kind of peace and accept this transition.

Chorus - Somewhat enigmatic but very evocative. I agree with Glosh that "dancer" is being used as a kind of species in the same sense as "human". Despite what many have said about "dancer" being connected to the idea of predestination or control, I think that it has positive connotations here. My reason for this is that dance is usually seen as a form of self-expression, representing movement, freedom, and beauty. I interpret "human" to mean flawed and limited in the sense of "only human" or "human nature". "Dancer" connotes some kind of transcendence and freedom. Essentially, this is asking "Are we human, or something more?" But it could very well be the other way around. The next line of the song, "My sign is vital, my hands are cold" is also ambiguous. Essentially, this line seems to be declaring that the singer is alive and active. The term "vital signs" is usually used to mean the bare minimum necessary to sustain life, but the unusual word order places emphasis on "vital", implying energy and alertness. I interpret "my hands are cold" as half of the expression "cold hands, warm heart". It could also be an expression of the singer's need for the warmth of human companionship, or even be a reference to death. (In this last case, the entire line seems to imply some kind of living death or suspended animation.) There's not really enough information to decide one way or the other. The next line adds a sense of desperation and importance to what is apparently the central question posed by the song: "Are we human or are we dancer?"

Third verse - The singer is saying goodbye to several societal values. There is some implication that these values have died in a figurative sense, in the way that people sometimes say "chivalry is dead". The general sense is that "noble" ideas like romance, virtue, and even soul have disappeared or been lost from the modern world.

Fourth verse - This might be the crucial verse to understanding the meaning of the song. The singer bids farewell to devotion and asks the listener to let him go. I tend to think this is about the end of a long-term relationship where the singer is asking his partner to let him go, although this is difficult for both of them, because he needs to be free to live his life.

Fifth verse - The words "system" and "message" imply computers and modern technology. This seems to be an appeal to the warm, living part of the listener. The word "heart" symbolizes love and, in this context, biological (rather than artificial) life. The singer seems to be asking the listener whether she still has enough real emotion to be able to understand him and let him be free.

At the end, the line "You've got to let me know" again connects the human vs. dancer question to the listener's decision of whether or not to let the singer go. It is implied that this decision will settle the question of whether or not we can transcend our limitations and reach a higher state of some kind.

Standing On The Edge Of Summer

In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”
