"what's left for me?" a sullen walk to the steeple top to look over the city. he carves his name in that old brass bell, so when it rings he can hear it in hell. one last look to that western sky, one last wish he could have changed his life. I take this song to take place after "White Oak Doors" off of "Empty Nights & Sleepless Day". This song is told from the point of view of the younger brother who survives his confrontation with his brother and is now looking back at his life now that he's had such an intimate run in with death. He is walking away from train-track and finally realizes what a bad person he's become. He is beginning to regret the action he's taken ("I killed my father, I've killed my brother, I left my mother in your god's hands"), so he heads to a church to find absolution. He's told there (Either by a priest, God, or himself) that he's been forgiven, but he finds no comfort. He goes to the steeple and puts his name on the brass bell there before he leaves town forever.
