Every Man I Fall For Lyrics

Every man I fall for
Drinks his coffee black
Love and hate are tattooed on his knuckles, and
My name is on his back

Every man I fall for
Works the graveyard shift
He kisses me softly to wake me up
Then takes my place in bed

And I fall
I live with one concern
It's the law of
Diminishing returns
It's the law of
Diminishing returns

Every man I fall for
Keeps his anger on a string and holds it tight
When other men walk by blinking their eyes at me
He always picks a fight

I go walk alone down Ocean Boulevard
Peek in your windows
Tired housewives naggin' at their husbands, but
This is the life you chose

And I fall
I live with one concern
It's the law of
Diminishing returns
And I fall
I live with one concern
It's the law of
Diminishing returns

Every man I fall for
Nearly every man
Every man I fall for
Nearly every man

One of the record's slow-tempo tunes, "Every Man I Fall For," is about relationships from a woman's perspective.

"Coming from a divorced family, my mom was very important to me," Willett says. "And I've always been very sensitive to a woman's... to how women just, they generally get more screwed by relationships, be it marriage or dating ones, than men do. And even that — is that a very sexist thing to say? I don't think so. I think it's just generally true."

I know there is some meaning behind this (but i'm a little too tired to try my hand at it right now), but the line "love and hate are tattooed on his knuckles..." is a reference to an old 50's movie called "The Night of the Hunter". In that film, the main villian, Mr. Powell, is a Preacher who has "HATE" tattooed on his left knuckles, and "LOVE" tattooed on his right knuckles. Perhaps later I will give it some serious thought, but if anybody would like to dig deeper into the meaning, that's the reference that is being made. Hope this helps!

I know this song is old but I just heard it and i absolutely love it. I don’t really have an interpretation but I wanted to say that I wish Lana Del Rey could cover this.

The line is "It's the law of diminishing returns." This is an economic law concerning employment. When firms hire employees, each employee produces a certain amount of output, or "returns." Each additional employee adds to this total output. However, it gets to the point where each additional employee crowds the workspace and hinders production, so that each employee is therefore able to produce less output for their wages. Therefore your returns begin to diminish if you hire too many employees.

about "every man i fall for keeps his anger on a string and holds it tight" most likely means he withholds his anger, but i also believe it could mean the man portrays his anger through his dog. i'm not sure portray is the right word, but like his dog is an extension of his anger.
