Images of Heaven Lyrics
Nothing is sacred
So, give me your soul, my love
Nothing is wasted
On someone like you
Somebody killed me
They tore out my heart, my love
Somebody filled me
With photos of of you
And there's nothing I can do
The media made you
There's nothing I can do
'cause you don't exist
You don't exist
Just images of heaven
That take me to hell
Images of heaven
Are something for sale
Images of heaven
Images of heaven
Something possessed me
An image of you, my love
Video visions
That play on my mind
Nobody blessed me
With power to reach my love
One cheap illusion
Can still be divine
And nobody believes
In this new religion
Yeah nobody believes
'cause nobody sees
Nobody sees these images of heaven
That take me to hell
Images of heaven
Are something for sale
Images of heaven
Images of heaven
Images of heaven
Images of heaven
And there's nothing I can do
The camera made you
There's nothing I can do
'Cause you don't exist
You don't exist
Just images of heaven
That take me to hell

Think it about somone who's in love with a fictional character and is sad she isn't real
It's about porn in my opinion. Really weird song no matter what you think of it though.
Your opinion is bunk I was there cuz I'm an old guy here's the straight dope - Videos had just come out the Ideal romantic and stylelistic images with them, remember this was before MTV became more about money than art, the song is about a oman he see's in the newgenre of music videos. Your comment is a sad reflection on the current idea of romantic ideals and I feel bad for young people today.

Not really sure what this song means. As alistrine13 said it could be about porn, but if it is there is a serious disconnect between the lyrics and the feelings invoked by the music. The music invokes a sense of longing, in me at least. Maybe I'm just a romantic but I'd like to think it was more about the longing for someone that you can never have, someone who doesn't exist, a modern day Dulcinea.
In reality though it seems more likely to be about how modern culture creates an ideal of people, movie stars and such, as opposed to who they really are. The public only sees pictures of celebrities all dressed up (or dressed down if we get back to the porn) in magazines or playing a part in a movie. Celebrities tend to be idealized, and idolized, and what you see in these images is not likely to be what you get in real life.
Then again, it could just be about porn. And to be fair, how different would that be to my speculation?
Mixing the two general ideas presented so far...what if the man is infatuated or in love with a porn star?
"Somebody killed me/And tore out my heart, my love/Somebody killed me/Because of you" - Perhaps his lover left him because they were fed up with the man's porn addiction or infatuation with the pornographic actress.
I do agree that there is a feeling of sadness and longing invoked by the music. The man is aware that his admiration is foolish, harmful, and pathetic ("Images of heaven take me to hell" - hell could be interpreted as a feeling of anger, sadness, etc. or literal Hell due to sin) but he simply cannot help how he feels ("And there's nothing I can do"). He is aware that the woman is simply an actress in front of the camera and the "real woman" the camera doesn't capture may be someone completely different, yet he is in love with the media-made version of her anyway. ("The camera made you/There's nothing I can do/'Cause you don't exist"). All he has are his Images of Heaven.
Listening to the song, I think it's about porn, but it could also be about somebody's obsession with porn, or a particular image or fantasy (as the music video illustrates perfectly). Alternatively, the song could be about a guy who's in love with somebody he doesn't know, and all he has is an image. In a broader sense, I think the song is about obsession, an individual obsession that is fuelled by a broader collective obsession with celebrity body image.
When you're an illusion You can still be divine
is actually "One true illusion, can still be divine"
It's about a guy who thinks he is in love with a girl he doesn't know. She may or not be famous. He is in love with the idea of her.....but he actually doesn't know her.......thus the line "you don't exist"
To me this song is about a person that we loved and lost and their ghost still haunts us.
Somebody killed me And tore out my heart, my love Somebody killed me Because of you
It doesn't mean that it literally killed him but the lost has made them feel like their heart is missing and it's only filled "pictures of you" or memories of that love, but they're only images and not real anymore. All that's left are the memories and the nightmares that come at night. It's quite personal and deep.
Maybe I'm a bit on the older side with a few ghosts in my own past, but I think it's a hauntingly beautiful song that has nothing to do with a fictional character.
