The Lighthouse Song Lyrics

And I've been getting urges late at night
To walk and walk for days and throughout lights
Through people's houses, picking food from plates
Through people's gardens, picking locks on gates

So we are moving to a lighthouse, you and I
While seas drown sailors, we'll be locked up safe and dry
And though our doors may knock and rattle in the wind
I'll just hold you tight and we'll not let those fuckers in

And I've been leaving gifts out in the woods
That someone might stumble upon and wonder at their origins
I've been feeling like a fox with sad old eyes
Whose skulk has all moved on to leave the dark and empty den behind

So we are moving to a lighthouse, you and I
While seas drown sailors, we'll be locked up safe and dry
And though our doors may knock and rattle in the wind
I'll just hold you tight and we'll not let those fuckers in

I'll anull these little walls of attrition and these invocations
That's seen me holding my camera out at arms length
To self-document these new locations
When I should be leaning against you
Deciding on things to get done
And you should be leaning on fountains
And filling my space up and breathing the air from my lungs

Na na na na

So we are moving to a lighthouse, you and I
While seas drown sailors, we'll be locked up safe and dry
And we are moving to a lighthouse, you and I
Our beams will burn the clouds to beacons in the sky
And though our doors may knock and rattle in the wind
The wind...
I'll just hold you tight and we'll not let those fuckers in

"And you should be leaning on fountains/And filling my space up and breathing the air from my lungs"

I love Josh Pyke's turn of phrase... he always seems to come up with lines that just knock me for six. Amazing writer.

This is a beautiful song, however the correct line is "to walk and walk for days and throughout lives".

He's probably written this song when he's been lonely on the road. He talks about having the camera out at arms length, taking photos of himself, symbolising being somewhere worth documenting, viz., away from home...but he'd rather be just with his woman battling through everyday life, or things to get done. The lighthouse is somewhere they can be isolated away from everything, and it is a place you can not leave.

Josh pyke was being interviewed on triple j and mentioned that this song was about the end of the world. He say 'So we are moving to a lighthouse, you and I' because he believes its the safest place and even though people are dying and the doors may rattle they won't let anyone else into their safe place. 'And I've been leaving gifts out in the woods That someone might stumble upon and wonder at their origins' He's leaving supplys and stuff for anyone who may have survived whatever has happened. 'That's seen me holding my camera out at arms length To self-document these new locations' He's recording what has happened for some reason, just documenting for future reference. Those are my thoughts and also what he said on triple j

I heard on JJJ live at the wireless tonight that this song is about the lighthouse in Byron Bay ?

where can i find the interview he gave on triple j? i want to use this interpretation of the song in a project im doing but i need the actual interview, where is it?

On one of his DVD's Josh says that he wrote bits and pieces of this song all over the world on the Memories & Dust tour. He mentions how he was on tour and away from home for so long that he was pretty much longing for solitude and getting away from everything. He also says that the song is sort of like a travel log for him, and by the time he was writing it, he was definitely over the whole touring thing, and, I quote, "just wanted to kind of bunker down somewhere in a different space of my own."
