Jocasta Lyrics
When the baby's born
Oh, let's turn it to the snow
So that ice will surely grow
Over weak and brittle bones
Oh, let's leave it to the wolves
So their teeth turn it to food
Oh, its flesh keeps them alive
Oh, its death helps life survive
Oh, the world can be kind in its own way
Oh well, your future's a machine
With the mechanics of a dream
And it's your mind that spins the wheel
And your heart that makes you feel
All the guilt for all your sins
Oh, as that wheel spins
Oh well, it plays as they believed
And for your husband you have grieved
Oh, the world still deceives you as it turns
And in my lucid moments I could see
Oh, that the heart may be the weakest part of me
Oh, and the moon controls the movements of the tide
Oh, but it has no weight on the movements of my mind
But if you turn your hands to flames
Oh, the light will burn the same
Whether you just pass it through
Or if it's what you meant to do
And your sense of culpability
Is from the Gods that you perceive
Their constant lies that you believe
Will show you grace
Oh, when you turn to a ghost
Oh, but now the love you found
Just lays you down on the muddy ground
And oh, the death will let you down
'Cause your verse will still go on the same
Oh, let's turn it to the snow
So that ice will surely grow
Over weak and brittle bones
So their teeth turn it to food
Oh, its flesh keeps them alive
Oh, its death helps life survive
Oh, the world can be kind in its own way
With the mechanics of a dream
And it's your mind that spins the wheel
And your heart that makes you feel
Oh, as that wheel spins
Oh well, it plays as they believed
And for your husband you have grieved
Oh, the world still deceives you as it turns
Oh, that the heart may be the weakest part of me
Oh, and the moon controls the movements of the tide
Oh, but it has no weight on the movements of my mind
Oh, the light will burn the same
Whether you just pass it through
Or if it's what you meant to do
Is from the Gods that you perceive
Their constant lies that you believe
Will show you grace
Oh, when you turn to a ghost
Just lays you down on the muddy ground
And oh, the death will let you down
'Cause your verse will still go on the same

I think this is about the legend of Oedipus, from his mother, Jocasta's point of view
Correct lyrics: When the baby s born Let s turn it to the snow So that ice will surely grow Over weak and brittle bones Let s leave it to the wolves So their teeth turn it to food, It s flesh keeps them alive As death helps life survive The world can be kind in its own way Your future s a machine With the mechanics of a dream, It s your mind that spins the wheel And your heart that makes you feel All the guilt for all your sins Oh and as the wheel spins, It plays as they believed And for your husband you have grieved The world still deceives as it turns, Oh and in my lucid moments I can see That the heart may be the weakest part of me Oh the moon controls the movements of the tide But it has no weight on the movements of my mind But if you turn your hands to flames Oh the light will burn the same Whether you just pass it through Or if it s what you meant to do And your sense of culpability Is from the Gods that you perceive Their constant love that you believe will show you grace As you turn into a ghost Oh but now the love you found Has laid you in the muddy ground Oh but death will let you down Because your curse will still go on the same
It's most certainly about the myth about Oedipus.
"When the babies born Oh, let's turn it to the snow So that ice will surely grow Over weak and brittle bones Oh, let's leave it to the wolves So their teeth turn it to food Oh, its flesh keeps them alive Oh, its death helps life survive Oh, the world can be kind in its own way"
when Laius and Jocasta heard the prophecy about their son, they sent him to be killed in the snow. then it speaks of the inevitability of the prophecy and how there was no way to avoid it.
Beautiful.
love, love this song. about the seasons of life. turning and turning, know what i mean?
i agree, this song is incredible. I think this song is Oedipus inspired. Jocasta in greek mythology is Oedipus wife and mother. It talks about guilt for all her sins and grieving for her husband Jocasta also mean shining moon, "Oh and the moon controls The movements of the tide"
but if you turn your hands to flames oh the light will burn the same weather you just pass it through or if its what you meant to do and your sense of comparability is from the guise that you perceive there comes the moral that you believe that will show you grace oh when you turn to a ghost oh but now the love you found has made you......and bloody ground and oh the death will let you down cause you'll burst but still go on the same
Thx a lot. :)
Hmmm, I thought it was...
"But if you turn your hands to flames All their light will burn the same Whether you just pass it through Or if its what you meant to do And your sense of culpability Is from the guides (gods?) that you perceive Their constant lie that you believe Will show you grace Oh when you turn to a ghost Oh but now the love you found Is raising you from muddy ground And oh the death will let you down 'Cause your curse will still go on the same"
This is important because the song seems to be about the battle between determinism and existentialism. Keep in mind that Jocasta was the mother of Oedipus, whose entire life was helplessly ruled by the fates in spite of the desparate attempts to change his destiny, a moral that this song seems to propel, yet disregard at the same time.
So, how much control do you have over your own life, and will subscribing to any particular philosophy or religion change your destiny? Or should you just live your life and be happy in the moment for the sake of love?
hudsucker... U may be right. But with another change in lyrics i think i will wait for maybe official ones or smth? :)
Yeah it's Oedipus inspired. An oracle foresees that Oedipus will kill his father (King Laius) and then marry his mother (Jocasta). They sent a servant to leave it on the top of a hill so it could die 'Oh, let's leave it to the wolves Oh, their teeth turn it to food'. However, a shepherd adopts him and when he grows up, ends up having an argument with Laius (not knowing he is his father) and kills him. He marries Jocasta who has children with him but then kills herself 'Oh well it plays as they believed And for your husband you have grieved'. And yes, hannahelizabeth you were spot on with the moon reference too.
