Bleeder Lyrics

Lay thee down.
Park your head upon my pillow.
Naked trees they dress in crows,
Greet the horses coming nearer.

Through the rains that bring you down.
You're a man, humble as a hope.
Oh-oh-oh, lay with me.
Oh, closer to my body.
Oh-oh-oh-oh.
When things go wrong, you'll find you're a bleeder.

You're a man, humble as a hope.
Oh-oh-oh, lay with me.
Oh, closer to my body.
Oh-oh-oh-oh.
When things go wrong, you'll find you're a bleeder.

Oh, when things go wrong, you'll find you're a believer.

According to the review at http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2009/mar/12/review-emiliana-torrini, Torrini introduced this song at a concert by saying it was "a song about f***ing".

I was going to complain about this song not having more comments...but the juxtaposition between those two existing comments is so perfect, they should lock this comment section.

This song speaks of so much more than what has been said, though what has been said is not wrong! ...except for the Christian silliness. This one invokes a lot of interpretation, which is what art is all about. Emiliana lost her boyfriend to death, but I did not loose my girlfriend in that way. Yet I identify with being a "bleeder", being an emotional guy, and I identify with lose. Could she be identifying a weakness or emotional strength in her man after his death? Could she be moving on? The 30+ times...

She explains it as the feeling of humbleness when trying to comfort somebody who lost another. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9eGMCA31EmQ

She's saying to man that he is only human. He is not immune to avoiding extreme emotions. Those could be love, as indicated by "park your head upon my pillow", "closer to my body", etc.

That extreme emotion could also be some type of major loss: "trees dress in crows", "humble as a hope", "through the rains that bring you down", "when things go wrong".

I'm leaning toward a connection between the two...during a time of great loss, the first major feeling the can lift the man's spirit is love.

Also, the last line is my favorite. I don't know if it was intentional, but it is a beautiful representation of a Christian message...it is not during times of wealth and prosperity, but rather sickness, poverty and/or dispair that people generally find the truth about Jesus Christ. This is clearly stated througout scripture, in billions of people's lives in history, and also in the poem "Footsteps":

One night I had a dream-- I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord and across the sky flashed scenes from my life.

For each scene I noticed two sets of footprints, one belonged to me and the other to the Lord. When the last scene of my life flashed before me, I looked back at the footprints in the sand.

I noticed that many times along the path of my life, there was only one set of footprints. I also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in my life.

This really bothered me and I questioned the Lord about it. "Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you, you would walk with me all the way, but I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life there is only one set of footprints. "I don't understand why in times when I needed you most, you should leave me."

The Lord replied, "My precious, precious child, I love you and I would never, never leave you during your times of trial and suffering. "When you saw only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you."
