Lille Lyrics

He went to see for a day
He wanted to know what to say
when he asked what he'd done
in the past to someone
that he loved endlessly...
now she's gone, and so is he...

i went to war every morning
i lost my way, but now I'm following
what you said in my arms...
what i read in the charms
that i loved durably
now it's dead and gone, and i am free...

i went to sleep for the daytime
i shut my eyes to the sunshine
turned my head away from the noise
bruise and drip decay of childish toys
that i love arguably
all our labouring gone to seed

we went out to play for the evening
and wanted to hold on to the feeling
and the stretch in the sun
and the breathlessness as we run
to the beach endlessly
as the sun creeps up on the sea...

It's a bittersweet as if the loss was somehow fleeting yet freeing her soul. The man lost for she is gone and now so is his very core. For her, she is free finally, as if from this very earth to journey past the confines of the physical and finally feel bliss. the mellow mood is somehow soothing yet a melancholoy of sadness while holding a glimmering shade of happiness in its hopeful upbeat voice and therefore sight of light. the music video often dictates what the writer is feeling and it is of re-birth and rejoice for anew; perhaps it is a sign of both death that brings another new birth of love.

In a recent interview with NPRs All Things Considered:

---...on "Lille," the album's lead single and last tune, Hannigan finishes with an a cappella moment. She says she wanted to end the record with that particular song, but that decision didn't necessarily have anything to do with the way she sang it.

"It always makes me smile when I'm singing it," she says. "Even if I'm not necessarily [smiling] at the beginning, I am at the end. And it was the first song I wrote when I left the band."

Hannigan was abruptly fired from Rice's band about 10 minutes before a show. But she says it was a long time coming.

"We'd worked together for seven years," she says. "So it was a long enough time to be working with anyone. And I think it had just come to the end of its natural life, really."

Despite the circumstances of its creation, Hannigan says that "Lille" is a hopeful song.

"It could have been quite dark. But I think it's definitely shining a positive light on stuff, as opposed to a negative. I suppose you can't really shine a negative light on things, can you?"---

Just some insight into it's creation.

I think she's talking about a relationship, and that she found something that broke them, like he was cheating. She wanted to get away and so she slept to get away from the pain and she is glad to get away from the war that she went to every morning.

This song seems like a nursery rhyme or a lullabye, I love it. I like to listen to this early in the morning in the car or on windy nights with the sound on my iPod low enough that I can hear the wind chimes in the background. This is one of her best vocal deliveries, even though I think "An Ocean and a Rock" and "Venn Diagram" are far bettery lyric-wise. This would be interesting to hear if I didn't know english, or if she sang it the same way in a different language, too. The words are great, but I think the music is good enough that you wouldn't need to really dwell on what the lyrics were in this song too much. It's incredible musically.

I have such a feeling that this song was about Damien. The first verse fits in so perfectly with what happened between them. How he let her go with no notice, no explanation.

This song is just so beautiful. Well written.

Yeah, it must be about Damien and her freedom after him. Just saw Damien latest appearance, he looksed so lost and messy, still great singer though, but, man, that's what gonna happen when Lisa Hannigan left you.

wow... i just saw her perform this on carson daly, and this sentiment describes quite accurately the way it made me feel. throughout, it seemed like lisa was always just about to break into smile... and by the end, she was. it could be so sad i think, but for some reason, when i listen, i also just keep finding myself smiling. it has an inexplicably hopeful essence to it.

Does anyone have any idea what "bruise and drip decay of childish toys" means? That's the reason I'm on this website in the first place lol, I could never figure out what she was saying in that line! So I looked it up today and now I'm just as confused as I was before.
