Hammers And Strings (A Lullaby) Lyrics

One, two, three, four

I write you from this grounded airplane
I wonder how you've been and where you are
A letter to the one who slipped away
A letter for the things that never start

Oh my imagination running wild
Guess I've missed you from the day that we first met
Crazy, this fascination makes a sound like a twister in my mind
The restless dream we left behind I never will forget

It's funny how the words we never say
Can turn into the only thoughts we know
But Austin's just so very far away
And I cannot believe I let you go

Oh my imagination's running wild
Guess I've missed you from the day that we first met
Crazy, this fascination makes a sound like a twister in my mind
The restless dream we left behind I never will forget

This restless dream

And so I called you from the darkness of my room
You'll never be a memory, now you're a restless dream
A restless dream

And so I write to this address that I don't know
You said you had to leave and we lost track
So if you hear this on the radio
I've said it now and there's no turning back

Oh my imagination running wild
Guess I've missed you from the day that we first met
Crazy, this fascination makes the sound like a twister in my mind
The restless dream we left behind I never will forget

Finally...a song that brings me back to the Something Corporate days.

Haha...does anyone else hear a little echo of Konstantine in this?

<3

Honestly, one of my favorites.

Andrew McMahon should sing ME to sleep. :)

this song gave me goosebumps. so fuckign amazing.

its about an old friend reaching out for help, perhaps with suicidal tendencies ("i know that im not crazy i just lost my will". he tries to help her get some sleep/relief by writing a lullaby.

i think there's an important word in the lyrics that is missing:

"Come on write me a song Give me something to trust just promise you wont let it be JUST the keys that you touch"

meaning she doesnt want the song to be superficial and half-hearted, she wants it to actually touch her, or more accurately, her heart

He wrote this song for his piano. "It was my tribute to my baby" - Andrew

Absolute Punk has a series of videos where Andrew talks about each one of the songs on the album, and in the one about "Lullaby" he said that the main reason for writing this song was his piano.

He was moving out of his old place and into a newer, much bigger home. So, he was finally able to have the grand piano that he always wanted. However, this meant leaving behind his old piano that was with him through "the dark punk rock clubs of 1000 american towns." This was the piano he had with him throughout Something Corporate's first Warped Tour until their North record.

"The intention was, I'm gona write a song for my piano, the last night that I play this piano.. It's about that ... Obviously, you know, there's the conversation about the friend calling, but whatever, it's all really rooted in this idea of the piano almost being its own soul.. and it's connection to me and what it represents"

But, in the end, this song is just another representation of Andrew's amazing-ness and his ability to make even a song about his old piano relateable to his fans. To him, it's about his piano.. But to us it's about a relationship, a friendship, a loss, anything we want it to be.

i have also heard that it's about his piano - at least that's what he said at the JM concert i went to but i was thinking .. if it WAS about a girl - he probably couldn't really admit it or say that to his fans because he's married and it wouldn't be right .. i mean, i am sure he loves his wife but you never really forget the first person you were in love with (girl he wrote konstantine for??) .. i don't really know for sure it's just thought that maybe he can't talk about what the...

@JustKeepSwimming Hello from 14 years into the future! I just listened to this song again and I distinctly remember Andrew saying this when I saw him live way back when (but I couldn't find evidence of it). I've upvoted this comment so hopefully it'll appear higher up now!

this song is so beautiful.

i agree. this song is phenomenal. i think she really misses her friend "andy" except i don't reallt think she necessarily has to have suicidal tendencies. people take pills for so many reasons these days and sometimes you just lose your will to be dependent off of them.

i think we all have stayed awake at night wishing for someone to sing us to sleep, and here is a person singing for everyone who has no one.

This man never fails to completely blow my mind. Fucking brilliant. This song gives me shivers evert time I listen to it. I am quite sleepless, and I don't think I'll ever listen to anything else ever again when trying to sleep.
