Drop Out - The So Unknown Lyrics

I'll give you this confession
I am taking you with me
Where we can contemplate our chemistry

And your eyes were lined with questions
With the blood rushing to waste
To take this feeling with us to our graves
To our graves

I get the feeling we're so misdirected
I get the feeling we have lost control
Til then I'll turn you to the new religion
We're dropping out into the so unknown
So unknown, yeah.

And we won't wake up on Sunday
So I'm building us a church
Where we can sleep in
With the gods at work

And our friends will write us letters
They'll never understand why we don't call
We're hiding out until the empire falls
Let it fall.

I get the feeling we're so misdirected
I get the feeling we have lost control
Til then I'll turn you to the new religion
We're dropping out into the so unknown

If we have lost control,
We're drifting slow
Into the so unknown

If we have lost control,
We're drifting slow
So we drop out

And I'll give you this confession,
I am taking you with me.

I get the feeling we're so misdirected
I get the feeling we have lost control
Til then I'll turn you to the new religion
We're dropping out into the so unknown

I get the feeling we got disconnected
I get the feeling we have lost control
Til then I'll turn you to the new religion
We're dropping out into the so unknown

You're so unknown, yeah.
We're so unknown.
The so unknown, yeah.

Before I say anything, this is the most awesome song in the album =D

First, I think this song is about a heavy and fast relationship between a boy and girl who've fallen in love for the first time at a young age. It is sung in a boy's perspective.

"And your eyes were lined with questions With the blood rushing to waste"

  • This tells us that this is her first relationship because of the many questions in her eyes. She's never experienced love before and so she must be asking a lot of questions.

To take this feeling with us to our graves To our graves

  • Face it, being in love is like a drug. Falling in love and falling so fast at such a young age for the first time has got to be the most spectacular, natural, one-of-a-kind feelings a human can ever have in his or her lifetime. It's so great that it cannot be explained, hence taking it to the grave.

"And we won't wake up on Sunday So I'm building us a church Where we can sleep in With the gods at work"

  • These two are obviously in love, and so they abandon all daily as well as weekly routines to be with each other. In this case, they are abandoning church and sleeping in, possibly from having sex all night. (It's what couples do when they're in love =])

"And our friends will write us letters They'll never understand why we don't call

  • The friends of this couple are trying to see how they're doing, but end up being rejected because of their profound love.

We're hiding out until the empire falls Let it fall."

  • The empire line is where it gets a little complex for me. I think the word "empire" is used as another meaning for "young love." They're deep in love so therefore that love is express as a structure. This structure, like many of the "great" structures of the world have collapsed. Both are so blind by their love that they do not see something like this happening. And so they are "hiding" in it, not being able to see it from outside like anyone else can.

And lastly, the chorus. The center of the pie.

I get the feeling we're so misdirected I get the feeling we have lost control

  • Falling in love so hard and moving so fast has got to be a helluva ride and so it feels misdirected. Like there are no blueprints or plans for it. It also feels as though all control is lost. Those emotions and impulses are controlling your every move.

Til then I'll turn you to the new religion We're dropping out into the so unknown

  • The boy is, by all means, making that girl his whole life. She's his everything; every waking second is about her just like how religion is for some people. And both, as I've mentioned before are falling in "love," which is another word for unknown. The reason why I say this is because love is hard to explain. (Have you ever once heard of a good explanation of love other than "It feels great". Its just like a euphoria. Feelings of euphoria are awesome, but pretty damn hard to describe.

This is my take on the song. I hope everybody enjoys it as much I do =]

Great analysis! It makes the song easier to understand. Good job, bro (pun intended, he is my brother -_-).

i think "the so unknown" is marriage, and this song is about leaving an old life behind and starting over with his wife. it's about becoming someone's life, their everything.

"And we won't wake up on Sunday So I'm building us a church Where we can sleep in With the gods at work

And our friends will write us letters They'll never understand why we don't call We're hiding out until the empire falls"

they don't need to go to church or believe in anything else because they have found each other, and all they want to do is be together away from the rest of the world.

this song reminds me a bit of the ballad of john and yoko

And we won't wake up on Sunday So I'm building us a church Where we can sleep in With the gods at work

And our friends will write us letters They'll never understand why we don't call We're hiding out until the empire falls

totally and completely, this song is about entering into marriage-the so unknown.

I agree with ahn_TM. I think this is my favorite song off of the base album. If you include B-sides, I'll give the nod to "Doris Day" but I think DO-TSU is an amazing song.

And I love the way he ends the verses. They are so emotionally charged. The way he says "to our graves" and "let it fall" is just so powerful. Also, "your eyes were lined with questions" is a great lyric and that whole verse,

And your eyes were lined with questions With the blood rushing the waves To take this feeling with us to our graves To our graves

is just genious. I love how that verse sounds and the lyricism. It's amazing.
