She was waiting for her mother at the station in Torino and you know I love you baby but it's getting too heavy to laugh Lyrics
The glow around your face
When you see the lightning rays
I know I'm very near
And I can hear the thunder
A woman of perplexity
A woman for eternity
A woman of the land
A woman for a man
I'm down on my knees
And I'm saying: "Please believe me"
It's hard to fall out of love, completely
It's harder to find a way to come back, discretely
To speak of things anew
To weep in quiet blue
Brocade upon your bed
Memories shouldn't fade, at least of you
A sceptor of ice and fire
The spectre of my desire
A girl child of such loveliness
A woman of my emptiness
A woman of fame, renown
A woman who kicks the clown
A woman of the land
A woman for a man
When you see the lightning rays
I know I'm very near
And I can hear the thunder
A woman for eternity
A woman of the land
A woman for a man
And I'm saying: "Please believe me"
It's hard to fall out of love, completely
It's harder to find a way to come back, discretely
To weep in quiet blue
Brocade upon your bed
Memories shouldn't fade, at least of you
The spectre of my desire
A girl child of such loveliness
A woman of my emptiness
A woman who kicks the clown
A woman of the land
A woman for a man

I have known this song for ages now and to this day remains one of me very all time favorites. This song touches a few strings for me and always will. No need to get overly sentimental. Overall this is just a great song coming from a man who self thought everything he knows about music. And what a way with words he has.
I am very surprised that this beautiful song did not trigger any comment so far - perhaps because it is better known under the title "woman" than it actual original one "She was waiting for her mother at the station in Torino and you know I love you baby but it's getting too heavy to laugh"...
This said, for me, this song is ranking at the same level as Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah"...
Could anyone please help me interpret this song, I am sure most of us have heard it... It means a lot to me, for sure, he's deeply in love with this woman, perhaps falling out of love after a split, but trying to come back...
What do you think? Thanks
Hello Darimian! i actually know Shawn Phillips; i met him on monday... he's touring with my mom and stepfather's band called The NexXx. He's down here with us to practice and hang out. The first night we went out; everyone asked him questions about his songs and him and all that, and one of the questions that came up was, "how did you come up with the name of the "woman" song?". he told us that while he was living in italy for 15 years, he had met a 15 year old girl named Letizia, who was abandonned by her mother...

The first night we went out; everyone asked him questions about his songs and him and all that, and one of the questions that came up was, "how did you come up with the name of the "woman" song?". he told us that while he was living in italy for 15 years, he had met a 15 year old girl named Letizia, who was abandonned by her mother and had no place to stay. So he and his friends who lived together pulled through to keep her safe and support her while she had no one. After all that time helping her out, they couldn't afford to support her any longer; so they decided to buy her a train ticket (with the little money they had put aside) for her to find her place. She accepted the ticket and left for the train station. Shawn then stated that, when she had reached the train station in torino, she called shawn, crying on the phone saying that her mother was right there in the train station. *i can't word it exactly how he said the story, but it gave me the shivers... and that's how it fits in the title and the song.
;)
@Darimian @roadielee Thank you so much. We also love this song and agree it is up there with "Hallelujah". We partciuarly love Angèle Dubeau's instrumental version.

But the story behind it is even better. Life truly is stanger than fiction - and sometimes amazing. You made our day when we found this.
