Anyone Can Dig A Hole But It Takes A Real Man To Call It Home Lyrics

I'm no leader I'm just a mess
It's not the way it's supposed to be
It's just the way that it is

I'm afraid we are all victims here
And the one whose in charge
I've lead us all astray again

Oh, how the plot thickens!
Are we too far gone?
Are we too far gone?
We always assume the worst
We always assume the worst

I'm afraid no ones listening anymore
I'm freaking out
I'm so sick
I'm making me sick
Don't look down
Don't look down

The only thing in my way is myself
I'm just thinking out loud
I'm just thinking
How can I still be alive
I shoulda been gone so long, so long ago

I can't get away from it all
I messed up like I always do
I gave you nothing
I took you nowhere
You're still listening

I gave you nothing
I took you nowhere
You're still listening

The world around me
Has taken a turn for the worst
I'm left alone
Climbing to the top

Should I jump should I stay
Can I make another day
Should I jump should I stay

I am the one whose wrong x4
God forgive me

maybe people looked to him (spencer) for answers because he always seemed to be so in tune with his life. but he's letting them know, "i'm just leading you further from what you need" possibly with his addictions and everything. and at the end he's asking himself, "should i keep on like this? not only have i hurt myself, but also others." and then he asks God to forgive him, which shows that he wants to be given another chance.

Favorite song on this album right now.

This song is about Spencer being his own worst enemy. He's dug himself into a hole and is questioning his ability to fix himself.

I also think this is Spencer's thoughts about being the front man for this band. He feels like people are looking to him for the answers, but he's looking for answers himself. I gave you nothing I took you nowhere You're still listening Those lines gave me that impression.

yeah, like the great distress and devincore said, i think its about him being the one everyone turned to for answers, and he's letting them know; "im not perfect. i dont have them all. im sorry i didnt take you anywhere" but he feels like shit, too :)

This, like many songs on the new CD is about Spencers addiction to cocaine. In the new Alternative Press they interviewed him and he came out and said he had a serious problem. And although he never formally checked into rehab, he says he is "clean as a whistle." He also said that writing songs about his problem has helped him release his "demons." When he came to the rest of the band with his problem, they basically told him "we dont want you in the band anymore." This really hurt spencer and didnt help his addiction, or his falling in and out of depression.

In the opening line he says "Im no leader Im jsut a mess.....I've led us all astray." To him. He is the face of underoath along with Aaron... and he is stating that he has run this band into the ground with his problem. He then says "Are we too far gone?" This comes from when the band had a near break up and the peak up his addiction. He then says " im afraid no one is listening anymore." Like i said before...when he came to the rest of the band with the news of his addiction, and they turned him away. He was very hurt and was upset that they werent acting like the christians they should be. The rest of the song reflects his addiction and his struggle to break it. In the end he talks about "jumping or staying." This is about his battle with depression. Finally at the end of the song he is asking for forgiveness from God for all the wrong he has done.

So the rumors were true and Spencer does have an addiction problem...that is pretty much the tone of the whole album. Turning to God for the answer. Such a good piece of art.

I think you all nailed it. Definitely about addiction and the idea of Spencer being a role model are both true.

what you guys said seems completely correct.

lol, at first I was thinking this song is more like George Bush realizing how wrong everything went for him...but whatever.

Correction, thegreatdistress: he HAD an addiction problem. He's clean, now. I love this song so much. This new album doesn't really have any hooks, but the songs are all still so solid.
