Oh oh oh oh...
Start of the show
Hiroshima
And the people were shouting my name
As the house lights came down
And the spotlight followed me out
I waved hello to the crowd
And busted acts off of the stage
Oh oh oh oh...
They're watching me, watching me fall.
Maybe it was a rush of adrenaline
As the concrete rose to meet face
Maybe it was the sheer embarrassment
That kept me conscious and standing
As I crawled back up on the stage
And started pounding out the first song
There was blood on the keyboard
Oh my God...
Oh oh oh oh...
They're watching me, watching me fall.
Oh oh oh oh...
They're watching me, watching me fall.
You wanna see what's in my head?
You wanna see what's in my head?
You wanna see what's in my head?
Check it out, because
I got pictures of what's in my head
I got pictures of what's in my head
They took them in Tokyo
And I brought them back to the USA
Oh oh oh oh...
They're watching me, watching me fall.
Oh oh oh oh...
They're watching me, watching me fall.
Oh oh oh oh...
They're watching me, watching me fall.
It's true, I fell and hit my head, you know, I mean my head and my ankle was black and my head got a concussion, they took x-rays and I asked the doctor if he could tell if, whether I was...I didn't speak Japanese...talking to him.

ok the people who said its true are right, end of story.
in an interview, Ben himself actually said something along the lines of "i know a lot of my music involves metaphors and double meanings but this song is not that, this song is nothing but a literal account of a true story that happened to me, and thats all."
RE: jonasrivers' comment: he also said in the interview that the "you wanna see whats in my head?" section of the song is also simply literal. he actually got CT scans of whats inside his head because of his concussion
I think that it's probably just about him falling off the stage. And I don't think it's egotistical, just silly and funny, like a lot of Ben's tunes.
And the America metaphor was probably something he threw into a show to be funny and goofy and to make a statement in a silly way.
I think this song is a big metaphor for him saying, "I'm falling in the music industry, and my only fans are in Japan. And when I am falling, can my fans in USA see what I am thinking? Do they want to know what's going on in my head, and why I am falling?"
Makes sense to me.
i think this song is about an experience in Hiroshima but i think he got the idea for some of the song at this gig he played live and he improved a song that sounded very similar to this song but differet lyrics, and it was a year before hiroshima was released

theres teh vid
www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUomxBS0Yfo This video shows Ben Folds explaining the incident that happened in Hiroshima. This song has a literal meaning; Ben walks off stage, hits his head, plays the keyboard to find blood, goes to the doctor to take pics of his head because of his concussion.
This song is fairly self explanatory. It is the true story about one of Ben's shows in Hiroshima where he tripped and hit his head.
Reading into this a little too much xepfan221. He fell off of the stage in Japan.
Why else would he have an american flag at that exact part of the song that goes. They're watching me fall?
the song is self explanatory. but yeah, this really happened. I saw him play this last march or something and he said it was a true story and told us the story.
....and he literally says "it's true" in the recording.
This song is so similar to the way he did Rock This Bitch in Berlin.
@acoustic429 YES!!! I just watched this gig last night. And was floored! 💜🥶🎹
