Sister Lyrics

There's a chip on your shoulder, girl
And by God it'll make you fall
If you let it take a part of your soul

I see the love in your brother's eyes
And the love in your mother's cries
Sister don't test the ones you love

Sister don't let go
Sister don't let go of us
[x2]

Cause your roots will rot away
And your fruit, it wont grow
Your bark will wear thin, body hollow

I see the love in your brother's eyes
And the love in your mother's cries
Sister don't test the ones you love

Sister don't let go
Sister don't let go of us
[x4]

Don't test the ones you love
It'll only tear us down
If you want to feel alive
Then learn to love your ground
[x2]

Love your ground

Sister don't let go
Sister don't let go of us
[x4]

Beautiful that's the word

So beautiful. I think it's about his sister, or someone he considers like a sister, who is going through a rough patch. She's debating leaving, or committing suicide, and he's convincing her that there's people around her that love her so much, and not to test their love.

Gives me shivers, just the time I first heard it, it fit too well.

this is 100% about his sister, no doubt in my mind. it talks about his sister leaving and the struggle he is facing in making her re-assess the situation. a very moving song as a whole

Definitley about his sister, and a song I can identify with.

I don't even think his sister necessarily wants to 'leave', more that she's just going through a challenging stage in her life, which all of us with sisters, particularly younger sisters can identify with.

The 'chip on your shoulder' he talks about I think is referring to teenage angst and a general grievance with or grudge against life, which anyone who has been a teenage girl can relate to. And if she doesn't let it go she will push everyone she knows away. And eventually her roots (referring to her family) will rot away, and her fruit won't grow (she won't flourish and blossom, or reach her potential with this chip on her shoulder).

And he asks her not to 'test' the one's she loves, letting her know that she might just push them too far and he asks her to find other ways of feeling alive instead of releasing her aggression on the one's that love her. If she wants to feel alive she should learn to love herself and what she stands for.

I absolutely love this song and have to stop myself quoting it in arguments with my own sister!!

Its not about HIS sister necessarily. It just talking about the importance of family in general.

This song really means a lot to me. I'm the youngest one in my family, and I have two older brothers. We've really been through a lot, and they know that I struggle. For me this song signifies learning to love your family for all they are, and maintaining the love no matter what happens. If I want to feel alive, then I have to learn to love them, flaws and all.

when i hear this song it always brings back memories of my sister who ranaway leaving my mother and brother crying... n thats wat i kind of think this songs about. its about his sister that left the family to go see the world but he tells her to stay close and not to stray to far from the family or her "roots will rot away"

I think this song is about A sister, his or not, not necessarily important to me,, is dealing with lively issues very childish, almost as a martyr. Pushing her family away and sayind pity me in hopes that someone will live her life for her but thats not how life works. And she cant see that her mothers tears are not of weakness but care and her brothers eyes as well, which is all they can offer, love and care, the rest is in her control, to control or not. Kind of as if she was letting go of them because she was letting go of herself. p.s. I love when he says " dont test the ones you LOVE", that Love part sounds soooooo.

I think its about a family who have been through so much. But the 'sister' wants to run away from home to fulfill her dreams and feel alive.. 'If you want to feel alive Then learn to love your ground' but the brother narrating the story is saying that in order to feel better about her life then she should learn to love her home and surroundings. And the family obviously dont want her to leave 'Sister don't let go Sister don't let go of us'

My Interpretation
