i've come to meet you in Moscow, Idaho
i'll drive down to you if you talk specifically to pro-bo
to hear you say jessica when you're in Philadelphia
and i' would love to be courted long distance from Portland

i think it would be great
if you lived in a different state
otherwise i am to busy i'm always in a rush
and theres not enough room for all my stuff

i like boys from Tennessee
and they sure now how to make them in Ypsilanti
i'm going to bring a little brianna to you in indiana
i'll be wishin' i was kissin' with you in Michigan

i used to think it was great
when i got to look forward to seeing your face
but now that we occupy the same space
i just cant get excited in the same way

the further away the fuzzier your face
the harder to make a less desirable trace
when i'm looking at you through a telescopic lens
thats when its easier for me to use my imagination
but when i'm looking at you through a microscopic lens
thats when it harder for me to pretend

but i still think it would be great
if you lived in a different state
for thats the only way we can remain
in this lovey dovey romantic phase
without the drag of the everyday

i'm sorry that i liked you better
when i only knew you through your letters
take it from me the best way to be
is fickle and fackles and wishy and washy

let me tell you the best thing to do
when you live in a city (Milwaukee)
is find yourself a hottie
and when you realize you want more then just a smooch
pack up your bags and move to Minneapolis or Duluth

Both as a standalone and as part of the DSOTS album, you can take this lyric as read. As a matter of public record, Jourgensen's drug intake was legendary even in the 1980s. By the late 90s, in his own words, he was grappling with massive addiction issues and had lost almost everything: friends, spouse, money and had nearly died more than once. "Dark Side of the Spoon" is a both funny & sad title for an album made by a musical genius who was losing the plot; and this song is a message to his fans & friends saying he knows it. It's painful to listen to so I'm glad the "Keith Richards of industrial metals" wised up and cleaned up. Well done sir.

Light Up The Sky
Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
