Classic love story true to his western tx roots. One of my favorites as a story, but I think there are alot of songs that are amazing not even listed on this site. I guess I should figure out how to add them, because I have about 8 REK cd's.

In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

I didn't quite take the story to be about alien abduction. Given that the song is called "Spaceman", I went in thinking it was about an astronaut. In that context I thought Brandon was narrating as an astronaut (not unlike Major Tom from Bowie's "Space Oddity") getting called into duty. They put him in an operation to prepare him for the mission, one that he didn't initially want to be a part of. "But when they cut me open, I guess I changed my mind." They get him all ready and send him out. But he does something wrong when he's out there. He goes too far, forcing them to call him by his actual name in trying to get him back. He makes some grand realization about himself and his life. "That was a turning point. Oh what a lonely night." And whatever it is he realizes, he tries to send it back to Earth. "But the public don't dwell on my transmission 'cause it wasn't televised."
