Doves Circled The Sky Lyrics

Doves circled the sky
And light shone down
While we stood knee-deep in the stream

Chords rang out warm and clear
Sweet major chords
And they were ones and fours and fives

As we stood there, so straight and still
Our hair blowing softly
And our shirts and pants were all white
All linen and gleaming

Wind came out from the trees
A voice spoke out clear
It clearly spoke down from high above

"You are my chosen ones
Chosen to be
The way that you've already become"

Then the trees all groaned and they swayed
The wind roared, the earth shook
Then it all went quiet at once
The air cold and still
Then we all walked back up the trail
No one said a word
We got to the cabin and packed
We packed up our things

"You are my chosen ones
Chosen to be the way that you've already become
Yes, you're chosen to be
Chosen to stay the way that you have been all along

Once rehearsal is done
Open the gates
Let heaven's floodgates open wide
Now, rehearsal is done
Open the gates
Let heaven's floodgates open wide

Since nobody else has posted...

This is a song about a religious experience. The water, doves, and the voice from heaven are all echo the baptism of Jesus--the moment when his mission and identity were revealed to him. In this experience, they find that God accepts and loves them as they are.

No, I think this song is about a gun battle that takes place on a prison planet in a star system threatened by intense gamma radiation. As both sides fight, they're reminded that no matter who wins, their planet and culture is eventually doomed. The existential tone of the lyrics underlines the pointlessness of the conflict, and also the bitter recognition that even in the face of annihilation, they might all be mere puppets, acting again and again on an eternal stage, in a meaningless and uncaring universe.

That's what I got out of it. I don't know where the whole "religious experience" thing comes from!

I'm sorry, but atterlep was correct. Both primary members of Bodies of Water belong to the Christian faith, and almost every song they write contains allusions to scripture. This song is no exception, and is loosely based on the Baptism (and possibly Transfiguration) of Christ.

This is what I get for not reading. Sigh. Good post, hahahaha.
