The Beginning (A Simple Seed) Lyrics

I left my heart in a plastic box
on the bedside table.
It will be locked 'til I get home.
I've grown feeble and tired of the world,
and tired of constantly missing my girl.
And I long to smell the sea

I miss the Pacific Ocean
and the northwest air,
and to run each of my fingers
through the strands of her hair.
I've been all over this country lately,
but I've been nowhere it seems, nowhere.
Well, I've found the cure
for my landlocked blues.

It's coming home to you.

If a simple seed gets just what it needs,
then a redwood tree can grow
up to a hundred feet for the world to see,
and endure the sleet and snow.
But if my whole life was wrapped and priced,
I wonder what the tag would show.
'Cause every time I'm close to the holy ghost,
I always seem to let her go.
I let her go.

I think you guys almost had it on the song. I think he is talking about his wife. He misses her when he's away. He's talked about this before when he's on tours and stuff. He misses his home the smell of the sea and his wife.
"I've grown feeble and tired of the world, and tired of constantly missing my girl. And I long to smell the sea"

but towards the end he realize that as much as he misses his earthly relationship with his wife his heavenly realtionship is greater than that even.

'Cause every time I'm close to the holy ghost, I always seem to let her go."

The message we can draw from here is that our relationship with God should be first priority in our lives. Once we can find satisfaction in God then we can seek to share that with someone else in a earthly relationship.

THis is why divorce is such a problem, you see people feeling an emptyness in them and the think that a relationship with someone can fill that. But when they get married the realize that as great as it is, it's not good enough. We need to find completement in God first.

YES!

if this & gravedigging are my two least favorite songs off the album.... you know the rest of the album is amaaazing.

and i think this is about relationshps coming and going.. you have to start from scratch after you lose someone, but end can end up being even better than before.

although i don't get the holy ghost reference unless this song is more religious than i thought...

This is one of my favorite songs. It has a bit of a power ballad feel to it. I love what they have done with the new album.

i think the reference to the Holy Ghost means that this relationship he's missing isn't a good one. whenever he gets closer to God, he realizes she shouldn't be with the girl.

he seems to want to put his feelings on hold for a while cause the pain is too much.

I agree with you, phy54. At first I thought the "I always seem to let her go" was referring to the Holy Ghost, but then I realized that he's actually talking about the girl he's in a relationship with.

"But if my whole life was wrapped and priced, I wonder what the tag would show. 'Cause every time I'm close to the holy ghost, I always seem to let her go." I think that he is evaluating his life, and as part of it, his relationship with the girl, and realizing he's not in the right in place. When he does get close to the holy spirit, he lets the girl go. So, in getting closer to God, he must have found that she was not right for him. Of course, all of that is based on two lines lol... so I'm not really sure how the rest of the song fits in :)

"I left my heart in a plastic box on the bedside table. It will be locked 'til I get home." he doesn't seem to be planning on being with any other girl until he gets home.

while long, i'd say he's ready to go home.

and that should explain the first verse his heart is with his wife at home on the bedside table where his wife is every night.

Also this is defiantly my favorite song on this album.

I always thought this song was blatantly obvious, but was always confused by the last line. DanJackieChan, after reading your comment, it finally makes sense to me...even though I don't quite agree with your summary of the lyrics.

The bulk of the song is about being on tour and missing his wife and his home town. That's pretty straightforward. But the important part is just how much he misses home.

But the bridge goes in a different direction. He thinks of the seed of truth that has been planted inside of him, and all that he can do with his life by doing what he does out on tour, the difference he hopes to make in people's lives. This is where the "if my whole life was wrapped and priced...what the tag would show" bit comes in.

The last line is where he realises, as DanJackieChan said, what his life really is all about. Being close to the "holy ghost". And no matter how much he has missed his wife, he can "let her go" when he's close to the holy ghost. I was confused at first because I thought he was referring to the holy ghost as the "her"...but he's contrasting the two.

Matt makes us appreciate his relationship with the holy ghost by explaining how much he loves his wife and misses home, but then showing that his spiritual relationship tops all that. It's beautiful.

All IMHO

Matt's writing isn't brilliant at first glance, but they more you get into it, the more you appreciate.

IDK if anyones noticed but dont you think this song is for the Soldiers oversea's? Ofcourse its about how he misses his wife and thier realization. He left his heart in a plastic box till he gets home = he's in Iraq and thats where his heart is, waiting for him to come home. I totally lend this sone to them
