Cry Little Sister (Gerard McMann Cover) Lyrics

A last fire will rise behind those eyes
Black house will rock, blind boys don't lie
Immortal fear, that voice so clear
Through broken walls, that scream I hear

Cry, little sister (Thou shall not fall)
Come to your brother (Thou shall not die)
Unchain me, sister (Thou shall not fear)
Love is with your brother (Thou shall not kill)

Blue masquerade, strangers look on
When will they learn this loneliness?
Temptation heat beats like a drum
Deep in your veins, I will not lie

Little sister (Thou shall not fall)
Come to your brother (Thou shall not die)
Unchain me, sister (Thou shall not fear)
Love is with your brother (Thou shall not kill)

My Shangri-Las
I can't forget
Why you were mine
I need you now

Cry, little sister (Thou shall not fall)
Come to your brother (Thou shall not die)
Unchain me, sister (Thou shall not fear)
Love is with your brother (Thou shall not kill)

Cry, little sister (Thou shall not fall)
Come to your brother (Thou shall not die)
Unchain me, sister (Thou shall not fear)
Love is with your brother (Thou shall not kill)

Cry, little sister (Thou shall not fall)
Come to your brother (Thou shall not die)
Unchain me, sister (Thou shall not fear)
Love is with your brother (Thou shall not kill)

Thou shall not fall
Thou shall not die
Thou shall not fear
Thou shall not kill

Thou shall not fall
Thou shall not die
Thou shall not fear
Thou shall not kill

Well, whenever I listen to a song for the first time I close my eyes and let images form in my mind, and I did that for this song. (I didn't hear it on 'Lost Boys')

While I was listening this is what came to my mind. A teenage boy is sitting in his room covering his ears trying to pretend he doesn't hear anything because he's afraid but the walls of the house are thin and he can hear his father swearing and yelling and his little sister screaming and crying as she gets beat. Finally unable to take it the brother storms into the room and confronts his father, during the fight he accidentally kills him. After this the siblings runaway and live on the streets, but they're happy together because they're free ('Shangri-las') but the brother can't forget what he did and feels guilt, but then he remembers his sister and the guilt goes away ('unchain me sister')

I can't help but picture this every time I hear it now, but that's just me, and I'm weird.

My Interpretation

@treki I like your interpretation of the lyrics. I have always really liked this song, the music is so awesome, but the lyrics...always took away from it because of what it always sounded like to me. I like the way you view it, and relistening to it with that in mind, i can totally get that.

Your interpretation makes a lot of sense. Listening to the song, listening to the lyrics, I totally see what you're seeing, too. It clears the air a bit for those who might take the "love is with your brother" part a bit too far or think of it as being romantic rather than brotherly/protective. Very nice job :)

I love the way WiL's voice sounds in this. In a way, it's almost not typical Aiden music, but in a way it isn't something so completely out of the norm for them that you're left wondering just what the hell is that band doing? It's beautiful lyrically, vocally and musically, sort of melancholy. And... Kind of creepy as well. I think the meaning must either be very deep or I am very stupid because I couldn't even begin to interpret it. It looks to be about love and loss on the surface, but never trust the outer shell. Reading certain parts, I am forced to wonder if it isn't about incest. Examine these lines and tell me if it isn't at all plausible.

"Cry, little sister (Thou shall not fall) Come to your brother (Thou shall not die) Unchain me, sister (Thou shall not fear) Love is with your brother (Thou shall not kill)"

"I can't forget Why you were mine I need you now"

This is a disturbing yet exceptionally thought provoking composition. It is certainly about pain of loss or yearning as sung the way the main vocals are in the original. There is a marked degree of conflict occurring between the main vocals and that of the chorus. There is a command made...then a reply. The brother tries to tempt her but she unwaveringly retorts with commandment-like statements. There is a moral struggle. Do you know what Shagri-La is? It is a mythical place of bliss and delight. I don't think your assumptions are the least bit awry when it comes to an incestuous...

I love this song. I think that the (Thou Shalt....) is alittle creepy. I also, when I first heard this, soundly vaguely familar. I then asked my mum why it did. And had her listen to the song. She said it was the theme song to Lost Boys. Whenever I watched that movie, I used to walk out of the room whenever this song came on. But now that I heard the whole song, it's not as creepy as what I thought. Very good song. and an awesome band.

The thing about this song is that it can be taken one of two ways. If one knew that it was written for the movie Lost Boys, then you hear it in a sense meaning kinship. I guess a better way to put it is by saying that you see it as a song dedicated to the vampire clan, "Love is with your brother" meaning that love is with your kind, those who best understand you and such (In their case, vampires). However, if one did not see this from a theatrical point of view, then undoubtibly incest would come to mind. I wonder if it was originally meant to be incestuous, or if it was written in such a way to make the listeners question it... Or maybe the "Love" that is referred to is a protective, brotherly-love, not intimate. But in that theory, there are flaws. Such as "My Shangri-Las, I can't forget,Why you were mine, I need you now" which makes me think intimately...

In either case, the song (both the original and Aiden's remake) is absolutely amazing. I'd be lying if I said that the first time I heard it I didn't get chills. :)

I love this song as well. Not fully understanding of the entire meaning but still love it! I believe, however, "My Shangri-Las, I can't forget...." That means " special place(utopia of sorts) that he cant forget and needs it now, and he remembers when that place was his, so maybe not so intimate there. but yes other parts seem intimate, but i'm thinking more along the lines of brotherly love as you said. :)

this song means nothing to me........ ;/

I think that the writer was referencing the Original Dark Shadows 60's-70's. Barnabas the cursed vampire and his little sister Sarah (a ghost in the future) afraid of him and telling him that his actions are wrong.

My Opinion

Every time I hear this song it gives me the feeling betrayal of ones kin, and honestly I feel like the brother is either begging for forgiveness, or begging for his life. The loneliness is referring to the fact that once you've turned your back on your kind there's no one, but everyone will judge you on that. I did see lost boys when hearing the song, so I might be bias
