Closer Than We Think Lyrics
What's it gonna take for me
On my hands and knees
While other poets fill pages of loose-leaf
I feel cheap and I feel empty (I feel empty)
We will bathe in the sea of disbelief
But we will not go quickly
No we will not die so easily
And I knew that this would happen
It always does
And I couldn't stop my reaction
So I let it come
I let it come
I still hold the belief that we are free
That we don't need the rules to see
That despite what we've done
We're not alone
We're closer than we think to home
It didn't take me long to believe
That I could do anything
Turn the songs up loud so we could sing
I am true and I am living (I am living)
And we will walk through the valley of the shadow of the boring
And burn it all
No, we will not go quietly
And I knew that this would happen
It always does
And I couldn't stop my reaction
So I let it come
I let it come
I still hold the belief that we are free
That we don't need the rules to see
That despite what we've done,
We're not alone
We're closer than we think to home
To home, To home,
To home, To home,
To home, To home,
To home
Across the water
You call me, but I'm not listening
As I sink down (sink down)
Water fills my lungs as I begin to drown
I knew that this would
I still hold the belief that we are free
That we don't need the rules to see
That despite what we've done
We're not alone
We're closer than we think to home

This is one of the best songs on the Album.
I think this song is about his relationship with Christ….. I know people say they are not a Christian Band, but I don’t really think that is so true. So hear me out……”on my hands and knees”….he is praying…”I feel cheap and I feel empty”...doesn’t have that relationship that he needs. “I still hold the belief that we are free. That we don't need the rules to see” that is basically saying that the worlds rules don’t matter. “That despite what we've done” that is about God forgiving you no matter what you do he will forgive you. “Were not alone, we are closer than we think to home”…that is saying that God is always with you, and you are always close to your true home. The rest of the song is basically saying that he knew his life would be changed, but it took a while. If you disagree let me hear your side….. I am always open to different opinions; this is just what I am taking from the song.
i totally agree with this...they are totally a christian band despite what many think

such an amazing song, love the line "And we will walk through the valley of the shadow of the boring" And just the vocals on the chorus, i just love this song As for an interpretation...
I really think this song is... I'm not really sure what all the verses are about, but as for the chorus, its about something that he thinks was going to go wrong and he was right and now he "can't hold back his reaction"
This song just breaks my heart when he starts singing "to hoome, to hoome" woah. :)
My favorite in the album. They're amazing.
So so pretty mint song! I love it, probably one of my favorite songs and bands at the moment.
Classic Crime — “non Christian band”, “Christian members”… I’d probably struggle to write songs that have no Christian connotations at all if I was in their position. God is such an influential person in people’s lives. So this song is one of them talking about faith and doubts of God I guess. There are few references to biblical scripture in this song,
“Where are the poet's filled pages of the three” I take from this line - I want solid proof of the three in one: the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. If you look at, Matthew 14:22-33 these following parts of the song are referenced from that part of the bible. Or other experiences… “We will bathe in the sea of disbelief But we will not go quickly No we will not rest so easily” This speaks about issues of no faith and doubt,
Then continued in the bridge “Across the water You call me, but I'm not listening As I sink down (sink down) Water fills my lungs as I begin to drown” This whole part seems pretty similar to Mathew 14:28-31 where Peter steps out onto the water and walks to Jesus who is out for his early morning wander on water. The wind and rain threw up on him and he begun to sink. Jesus then reaches out, grabbing his hand and said something along the lines of, Oh my friend, where has your faith gone? Why did you doubt? ...Well kind of like that, in his language and with out slang I guess.
“And I knew that this would happen It always does And I couldn't stop my reaction So I let it come I let it come”
God will challenge him in areas of belief, faith and trust. His reaction like Peter's - maybe needing to be saved by Jesus
And the chorus, “I still hold the belief that we are free That we don't need the rules to see That despite what we've done, We're not alone We're closer than we think to home” “We are free” - free will to do what we want, “that we don’t need the rules to see” “that despite what we’ve done” - where we have messed up and done bad things also called, sin, God still loves us no matter. And will bring us home where we belong.
But yeah I guess this is my interpretation :)
I agree with jadoty and GodxTakeMyAll on the meaning. I think the lyrics of the first verse should be:

but so many of their songs have to do with faith if you look for the deeper meaning they are definitely a christian band...Name one of their songs that totally goes against the christian way of life

The Classic Crime is NOT a Christian band. However, most members are Christians. Yes, their lyrics reflect the life of a Christian. Look up the interview where Matt talks about it. They dont consider themselves as a Christian band but they do give messages of Christ in their songs. What Matt says in the interview is very admirable. But never will you hear them call themselves a Christian band. And they have a reason why but I'd rather you look it up because its so beautiful.
