Lookin' Back Lyrics
They hit the street, you feel 'em staring
You know they hate you, you can feel their eyes a glarin'
Because you're different, because you're free
Because you're everything deep down they wish they could be
You're lookin' back
They lookin' back
Too many people lookin' back
They lookin' back
They lookin' back
Too many people lookin' back
They watch the news, see young men dying
They watch them bleed and then they listen to them cryin'
And if they're normal, if they can see
They just reach out and change the channel on the TV
They lookin' back
They lookin' back
Too many people lookin' back
They lookin' back
They lookin' back
Too many people lookin' back
When they could vote, and end the war
They're much too busy putting locks upon the back door
Get you a foxhole, a place to hide
Because when the war comes, the cops will be on their side
They lookin' back
They lookin' back
Too many people lookin' back
They lookin' back
They lookin' back
Too many people lookin' back
They lookin' back
They lookin' back
Too many people lookin' back
They lookin' back
They lookin' back
Too many people
Too many people
Too many people lookin' back
You know they hate you, you can feel their eyes a glarin'
Because you're different, because you're free
Because you're everything deep down they wish they could be
They lookin' back
Too many people lookin' back
They lookin' back
They lookin' back
Too many people lookin' back
They watch them bleed and then they listen to them cryin'
And if they're normal, if they can see

This one always struck me as doubly clever. The first verse uses Looking Back literally - the long-haired rocker look Seger mused about in Turn The Page literally makes them turn their heads, do a double take, and judge, but he’s living his free, best life.
The remaining verses use Looking Back in a political sense, referring to backward-looking conservative thinking, especially regarding Vietnam. Interestingly, it’s the same groups looking back in both cases.
NO comments on this Great Blues tune?? I never got all the lyrics right until now-when I'm seeing them written down. I saw Bob Live a few years ago. It was GOOD-maybe not Great, but I'm a Michigander.
