I don't feel the song to be about a girlfriend per say, but a girl of interest, who's trust he betrays. I think he's saying he gave her up, chose the way with easy girls, easy ways. Because he loved her and didn't want to admit it to himself.
"I let you go, yeah, I know, I let you go And it was because I just couldn't let you know"
To me, that says he knew he felt or could feel so much for her, so he chose to, in lack of better words, to ignore it and stay on the path he was on. But he knows what he gave up, and he knows she will know, too.
Maybe I'm a hopeless romantic, but that line definitely throws a curveball in the song.
