If You Only Knew Lyrics
If you only knew
I'm hanging by a thread
The web I spin for you
If you only knew
I'd sacrifice my beating heart
Before I lose you
I still hold onto the letters you returned
I swear I've lived and learned
[Chorus]
Its 4:03 and I can't sleep
Without you next to me
I toss and turn like the sea
If I drown tonight
Bring me back to life
Breathe your breath in me
The only thing that I still believe in is you
If you only knew
If you only knew
How many times I counted
All the words that went wrong
If you only knew
How I refuse to let you go
Even though you're gone
I don't regret any days I spent
Nights we shared
Or letters than I sent
[Chorus]
I still hold onto the letters you returned
You helped me live and learn
[Chorus]
I'm hanging by a thread
The web I spin for you
If you only knew
I'd sacrifice my beating heart
Before I lose you
I swear I've lived and learned
Its 4:03 and I can't sleep
Without you next to me
I toss and turn like the sea
If I drown tonight
Bring me back to life
Breathe your breath in me
The only thing that I still believe in is you
If you only knew
How many times I counted
All the words that went wrong
If you only knew
How I refuse to let you go
Even though you're gone
Nights we shared
Or letters than I sent
You helped me live and learn

Brent said this was the first love song he has written, and he wrote it to his girlfriend to tell her how much she means to him.
I honestly don't see how this song could be based off of anything other than a breakup. Those of you insisting it's about his son should seriously take a look at the lyrics. Half of the depictions in this song are completely unlike a parent-child relationship.
She left. He was heart broken. He wants her to KNOW how much he actually cared about her and how much he still DOES care about her. If she only knew how much he loved her, how painful it was to have her gone, than maybe she'd change her mind.
That's what the song's about.

@Rstegs I personally agree with Rstegs despite what the actual meaning of this song is. My interpretation to it matches Rstegs. When my girlfriend broke up with me I connected with this song and that caused this interpretation.

I appreciate your support in my interpretation of the song. The naysayers here are clearly misinformed. Brent Smith even came out saying he wrote the song about an ex-girlfriend of his when she was pregnant with their child. Smith has described the song as "their first ballad".

@Rstegs I totally agree with you. The lyrics are clear that the woman left him and he's there all alone...

Maybe it is after all dedicated to his wife or w/e it is, since she could've left him at some point.

This is one of the best songs on the new albums I cant get enough of it. I love the chorus. I was looking on youtube and there was a video where Shinedown did an acoustic show and Brent said it was for his son.
To me it sounds like a story about a break-up and him telling the girl how much she means to him hoping she will return.
i absolutely love this song. it has alot of meaning to mee
Brent Smith had a phone call from his wife telling him that he's gonna be a father, and he wrote this song for his wife and son. That's the true meaning of the song. But the greatest thing about music is no matter what it's truly about, it can have so many different meanings. It can be depicted in any way possible. And in Brent's words, "it is not biast."
no one commented this song yet...and this is my first comment too lol anyway i heared this song a few days ago, my "ex" she sent it to me...the lyrics are pretty clear its about missing someone so much even though things have changed and their no longer together but he knows shes always in his heart....but thats just me lol...still its a wonderful song.
There's no way this song is about his son...Unless, he has a bad relationship with him ("I still have the letters you returned?"). I'm pretty sure it's just a straight-up love/loss song.
It could have been for his son, just not about him. you know? Good song tho. I can't get enough of this new album!!!!
Na guys Aproberts is right. He says its >>about
