Yeah, I get it you're an outcast
Always under attack, always coming in last
Bringing up the past, no one owes you anything
I think you need a shotgun blast, a kick in the ass
So paranoid, watch your back

Oh my, here we go
Another loose cannon gone bipolar
Slipped down, couldn't get much lower
Quicksand's got no sense of humor
I'm still laughing like hell

You think that by cryin' to me
Lookin' so sorry that I'm gonna believe
You've been infected by a social disease
Well, then take your medicine

I created the sound of madness
Wrote the book on pain
Somehow, I'm still here to explain
That the darkest hour never comes in the night
You can sleep with a gun
When you gonna wake up and fight
For yourself?

I'm so sick of this tombstone mentality
If there's an afterlife, then it'll set you free
But I'm not gonna part the seas
You're a self-fulfilling prophecy

You think that by cryin' to me
Lookin' so sorry that I'm gonna believe
You've been infected by a social disease
Well, then take your medicine

I created the sound of madness
Wrote the book on pain somehow I'm still here to explain
That the darkest hour never comes in the night
You can sleep with a gun
When you gonna wake up and fight
For yourself?

I created the sound of madness
Wrote the book on pain
Somehow, I'm still here to explain
That the darkest hour never comes in the night
You can sleep with a gun
When you gonna wake up, when you gonna wake up and fight?

I created the sound of madness
Wrote the book on pain
Somehow, I'm still here to explain
That the darkest hour never comes in the night
You can sleep with a gun
When you gonna wake up and fight
For yourself?
When you gonna wake up and fight
For yourself?
When you gonna wake up and fight
For yourself?
When you gonna wake up and fight
For yourself?

I think this might actually refer to two different mindsets.

In the opening verses, I'm not sure the song is actually directed at people who are "just" emo or spend a lot of time feeling sorry for themselves. It could all just be metaphor of course, but when it's talking about "another loose canon gone bipolar" or "I think you need a shotgun blast," that seems to be talking about people who are not just sullen, but violently misanthropic. I think it's referring to people who indulge in petty violence and crime and think that their fucked up backstory justifies it.

The second part, with "tombstone mentality," I think refers to people who think they've basically lost at life, nothing can come of it and they might as will give up and wait for everything to be okay after they die.

The social disease thing - There's a lot of people who when the time comes to face up to what they've done blame how society has forced them to become the person they are and to do the things they do, but there are social programs in place to help disadvantaged people get out of that cycle that most of them haven't tried to take advantage of. If it's a disease... take your medicine.

Sleeping with a gun... Probably mostly metaphor, but Paranoid wackos and soldiers in the real shit sleep with their guns.

Techno Ted
Audioslave
Techno Ted may be a person who caused Chris incredible emotional pain & trepidation as well as moments of peace & happiness but now is removed and awaiting his fate. Darling may be a different person who is also free of him and can live her life free of Ted's tyranny. "In between all the laughing, and daydreams ... lies: a desert of truth" Lies are like a desert or the omission of Truth: Where there were Lies then Truth was absent. The song, "Techno Ted", may be a cathartic celebration of the downfall of this person.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”
