No one is telling me the speed I should be traveling
So watch me take the lead
No one is telling me the speed I should be traveling
So watch me take the lead, yeah

There is an engine in my body
With every beat it lets me breathe
There is a machine within my body
If I could keep up with that machine that's in my body
I could do anything, be anything, see anything
I can feel the beat within my body
If I keep up with it could I catch myself?

[Chorus: Repeat 2X]
Have you ever been fake for the sake of saving face?
You can work, you can play
From the cradle to the grave
Doesn't matter what they say

Quick, quick, quick, come fix me up
I need to make my move (make my move)
This damn machine doesn't work the way that it used to
But that's what I get for taking it for granted
(I never even meant it, never even meant it)
That's what I get for taking it for granted
(No, I never even meant it, never even meant it)
If I keep up with it can I catch myself?

[Chorus]

No one is telling me the speed I should be traveling
So watch me take the lead (watch me take the lead)
No one is telling me the speed I should be traveling
So watch me take the lead (watch me take the lead)
No one is telling me the speed I should be traveling (no one, no one)
So watch me, watch me take the lead

[Chorus]
Doesn't matter what they say

well when i first heard this song, i thought it meant like he'll do what he wants and be who he wants to be, but then when i thought about it, could it be about a relationship? I know people get tired of people always thinking song are about love or relationships, but this part...

Quick, quick, quick, come fix me up I need to make my move (make my move) This damn machine doesn't work the way that it used to But that's what I get for taking it for granted (I never even meant it, never even meant it) That's what I get for taking it for granted (I never even meant it, never even meant it)

seems to me like hes trying to make a move on a girl. so lets see if i can break it down farther...

No one is telling me The speed I should be traveling So watch me take the lead No one is telling me The speed I should be traveling So watch me take the lead Yeah...

Okay, this could mean no one is telling him he can't take the relationship too fast, so he'll take it as fast as he wants, and basically control the girl.

however, it could also mean he can be the lead of whatever (become president etc) because no one told him otherwise

There is an engine in my body With every beat it lets me breathe There is a machine within my body If I can keep up with that machine that's in my body Well, I can do anything, be anything, see anything I can feel the beat within my body

The machine could be his heart and he sees a girl that takes his breath away, but if he can keep up with it he can say anything to her, once again, basically have her wrapped around her finger.

It could also mean if he follows his heart he can do anything...

If I keep up with it, could I catch myself?

This line could be hes wondering if he could catch himself before he makes a mistake if he keeps up with his heart

Have you ever been fake For the sake of saving face?

Could mean being a fake to impress a girl or being fake to get out of trouble...

You can work, you can play From the cradle to the grave Doesn't matter what they say Have you ever been fake For the sake of saving face? You can move as you may From the cradle to the grave Doesn't matter what they say

He doesn't care what people say, he gonna do what he wants from birth til the day he dies.

"Quick, quick, quick, come fix me up I need to make my move (make my move) This damn machine doesn't work the way that it used to But that's what I get for taking it for granted (I never even meant it, never even meant it) That's what I get for taking it for granted (I never even meant it, never even meant it)"

This is what really got me thinking it was about the girl. it seems to me like his heart skipped a beat because he found a girl he really likes, and now hes nervous about making a move on her, when it normally comes easy.

However, it could also mean somethings getting in the way of him following his heart or he comes to realize that maybe hes not always right.

and the rest is just repeating

So it could be taken either way...

I personally take this song as basically be yourself instead of trying to be something else just because people might not "like" the real you.

This song is totally about being who you want to be and not being fake just so that everybody will like you more. Be true to yourself and dont worry about what others think.

i feel like it could just be about life in general. be what you are really about, follow your own instincts. the engine in the body is you, your mind, instinct. its not working because so many people are being controled by the people around and not being true to themselves.

the song is like saying, dont worry about what other people say or think, you only live once, so you have to live true to yourself.

making your move doesnt have to be on a girl, it could just be making a move to better yourself in life.

and taking it for granted, is just taking granted for the life we are given, so why be fake just to please others?

surprised at the little comments this song receives. i really dig this song because I'm 19 and know what it feels like to be fake just to be please others. i've done it, i've seen it... this is a very uplifting song and i absolutely love it :)

It sounds like Shaant is saying that you cant please everybody, so literally; do what you do, because you can only ever make yourself happy in this life.

"You can work, You can play, From the cradle to the grave, Doesn't matter what they say"

Also, Don't listen to what others have to say, because it really doesn't matter. :)

Ministry
Both as a standalone and as part of the DSOTS album, you can take this lyric as read. As a matter of public record, Jourgensen's drug intake was legendary even in the 1980s. By the late 90s, in his own words, he was grappling with massive addiction issues and had lost almost everything: friends, spouse, money and had nearly died more than once. "Dark Side of the Spoon" is a both funny & sad title for an album made by a musical genius who was losing the plot; and this song is a message to his fans & friends saying he knows it. It's painful to listen to so I'm glad the "Keith Richards of industrial metals" wised up and cleaned up. Well done sir.

Standing On The Edge Of Summer
Thursday
In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

Blue
Ed Sheeran
“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
