Time Lapse Lifeline Lyrics
I’m keeping up keeping up with the time lapse lifeline
And they can run they can run from the font to the last rites
And we can hear we can hear the first beat to the flatline
I’m keeping up keeping up with the time lapse lifeline
And once it’s done
Oh we dreamed a life
It was just like that was just like that
And just like that and just like that it’s done
Back it up back it up
Stop fast forward rewind
And watch the sun watch the moon taking turns in the same sky
And you were dead as the leaves now you’re new like the springtime
Back it up back it up
Stop fast forward rewind
And once it’s done
Oh we dreamed a life
It was just like that was just like that
And just like that and just like that it’s done
Oh we dreamed a life
It was just like that was just like that
And just like that and just like that it’s done
Still we stand with the help of a steady hand
Capture images of boy and man
Until its done
And 7 years combined is just a flicker of a neon sign
Little negatives of hopes refined
Until they’re done oh they’re done
Oh we dreamed a life
It was just like, was just like that
And just like that and just like that it’s done
Oh we dreamed a life
It was just like was just like that
And just like that and just like that it’s done
Oh we dreamed a life
It was just like was just like that
And just like that and just like that it’s done
And they can run they can run from the font to the last rites
And we can hear we can hear the first beat to the flatline
I’m keeping up keeping up with the time lapse lifeline
And once it’s done
It was just like that was just like that
And just like that and just like that it’s done

And you were dead as the leaves now you’re new like the springtime
Stop fast forward rewind
And once it’s done

I definitely think this song was about her and conor's breakup because of the seven year thing and all. such a beautiful song, reminds you of how one moment you can be with someone and "just like that it's done" God bless Maria! she's amazzzzing.
Keep in mind, they've been an on-and-off couple. She very well could have written this in the midst of one of her and Oberst's more serious breaks.
instead of "And they can run they can run from the farm to the last ride"
i hear
"and they can run, they can run, from the font to the last rites" i.e. a baptismal font (birth to death)
That's what I hear, too.

this is one of my favorite songs of hers. its on the EP she just released and she tends to play it at her concerts.
Its pretty much about her break-up Conor Oberst (they dated for about 7 years)
It's not hopes replayed; it's "hopes refined"...
Beautiful, intensely sad song that gives voice to the fleeting aspect of time.
It's also clearly "dreamed a life" during the chorus, as opposed to "dream a life"...
I don't think this is about her break up with Conor. I saw her perform this song in the summer of 07' in Omaha ... and she was clearly still together with Conor. I saw her again a few months after that and she was talking about Cassadaga and referred to him as her boyfriend. So this was written before the break up.
Just wanted to add that I think the second line is actually "And we can run, we can run from the font to the last rites," which refers to, respectively, baptism and the sacrament given to the dying.
Also instead of "I get up, I get up" it sounds like "Back it up" which might make more sense with "stop, fast-forward, rewind."
I love this song. I'm not sure if this is about her and Conor, but I think it rings true with every ended relationship. When a relationship ends and you go back to reflect it seems that everything happened in an split second. It doesn't matter that each little frame of life may have taken a long time to capture, because when you look back, it appears as if it were just an instant or "a flicker of neon sign".
