Lucid Dreams Lyrics

Sweep slides on my stereo
Shortwave ride my rodeo
Beat [Beep?] came from [?] Avalon
But I’m flying to Istanbul.

Oh, so why don’t you meet me there?
There is no nation of you, there is no nation of me
Our only nation lives in lucid dreams
Lucid dreams, I’m living in lucid dreams
I’m living on shortwave streams tonight.

I’ll dial Alexandria
If you dial to Ithaca
South Fisher and German Bites
I skate around the world tonight.

Oh, so why don’t you come along?
There is no nation of you, there is no nation of me
Our only nation lives in lucid dreams
Lucid dreams, I’m living in lucid dreams
I’m living on shortwave streams tonight

I’m gonna give my aimless love,
My angry heart, my desire.
I woke with wings from lucid dreams
And knew the reason I felt hollow
Was that I may never know
If there is some great truth or not.

There is no nation of you, there is no nation of me
Our only nation lives in lucid dreams
Lucid dreams, I’m living in lucid dreams
I’m living on shortwave streams tonight.
Lucid dreams
I’m living on lucid dreams
No, there is just great mystery.

For those of you who don't know what a lucid dream is, it's basically when you realize you're dreaming /in/ your dream (e.g. you suddenly start wondering why you're wearing nothing but underwear to work), and start to the control the dream as your conscious self (doing stuff like flying, breathing underwater, or just struggling to remain conscious). Google it, it's a pretty cool concept.

Since I think lucid dreams are awesome, I'm inclined to think that this (amazing) song is talking about them literally - "shortwave streams" could refer to brain activity during REM sleep, "I skate around the world tonight" could be talking about all the adventures this guy is having as he dreams. "I woke with wings from lucid dreams" - for anyone who's ever experienced a real, vivid lucid dream, the power you have to do absolutely anything you want in this universe your mind has created is really like having a pair of wings.

"Oh, so why don't you meet me there" - there's stories of people meeting up during their simultaneous dreams... I don't believe that but what the hell.

Of course it could also just be a metaphor for the dream of love and truth, blah, blah, blah. My theory's more exciting :D

It's very true, it's really hard to explain to anyone who hasn't experience this personally, but the feeling you get is just so intense and amazing that you just don't get over it; it is really like having a pair of wings... especially when you do ;)

The line "I woke with wings from lucid dreams, And knew the reason I felt hollow, Was that I may never know, If there is some great truth or not." really speaks to how you feel about the "real" world afterwords; it just can't compare.

i think it's about feeling pretty insignificant, not really having control, or knowing why anything happens, but being ok with your own dream of the truth

This song is VERY different on the album compared to the iTunes version. IMO, album version is the shit!!! Franz Ferdinand has my blessing to explore all manner of electronic beats and synthy hooks..keep up the sexy work fellas!!

I love this version so much more than the album version! I'm a tad disappointed that this version isn't on the album.
