She told me not to step on the cracks
I told her not to fuss and relax
Pretty little face stopped me in my tracks
But now she sleeps with one eye open
That's the price she'll pay

I took a knife and cut out her eye
I took it home and watched it wither and die
Well, she's lucky that I didn't slip her a smile
That's why she sleeps with one eye open
That's the price she'll pay

I said, hey, girl with one eye
Get your filthy fingers out of my pie
I said, hey, girl with one eye
I'll cut your little heart out 'cause you made me cry

I slipped my hand under her skirt
I said don't worry, it's not gonna hurt
Oh, my reputation's kinda clouded with dirt
That's why you sleep with one eye open
But that's the price you pay

I said, hey, girl with one eye
Get your filthy fingers out of my pie
I said, hey, girl with one eye
I'll cut your little heart out 'cause you made me cry

You made me cry
You made me cry
You made me cry

I said, hey, girl with one eye
Get your filthy fingers out of my pie
I said, girl with one eye
Get your filthy fingers out my pie

I said, hey, girl with one eye
Get your filthy fingers out of my pie
I said, hey, girl with one eye
I'll cut your little heart out 'cause you made me cry

i'm not very familiar with F+tM, or even this song. Nonetheless, it's caught my attention, and my first impression doesn't look much like anything here, so i thought i'd share :-)

When i first heard this, i took it quite literally, and was pretty grossed out. But once i read through the lyrics while i listened, i got the impression that the girl with one eye is the narator at a younger age, when she was a kid, and how she's stifled her childllike self to be an adult.

"She told me not to step on the cracks I told her not to fuss and relax"

she's considering how she's changed from the time she was young to now--dropped her superstitions about walking on the sidewalk breaking her mother's back, etc.

"Well, her pretty little face stopped me in my tracks But now she sleeps with one eye open"

upon considering the differences, she's shocked by the contrast (as we often are.) i think this is how the little girl makes her cry.

"That's the price she paid" pretty self-explanitory, i guess.

"I took a knife and cut out her eye" the process of losing that blind innocence was painful, and self-inflicted.

"I took it home and watched it wither and die" it's gone. i don't think the "taking i home" is so important.

    "Well, she's lucky that I didn't slip her a smile" ???

"That's why she sleeps with one eye open That's the price she paid" same as before.

"I said, hey, girl with one eye Get your filthy fingers out of my pie" she still feels some of her youthful self surfacing, and insists that she back off, and take her grubby little hands out of her business.

"I said, hey, girl with one eye I'll cut your little heart out cause you made me cry" she's not happy about this transition she's undergone (growing up), and takes it out on the little girl she used to be.

"I slipped my hand under her skirt I said don't worry, it's not gonna hurt" she promised herself that sex wasn't going to be a big deal. i don't think this part is her own hand, but stands more for the fact that her giving up her innocence was her own doing, rather than blaming whatever faceless guy she slept with.

"Oh, my reputation's kinda clouded with dirt" she doesn't hide the fact that she's not a little girl anymore, and people don't approve.

"That's why you sleep with one eye open That's the price you paid" her innocent self pays the price for this reputation she's developped by cutting out her eye.

this probably isn't the best way of explaining this idea. but... there it is :)

He reuses the verse melody from the previous album's "Dirty Little Religion", the topics of the verses are all over the place, and he packs too many words into one line (goes to show...) and too few in another (it's pretty hard to find), and rhymes "Henley Regatta" with "Persona non grata", but gets away with it all as only he could.

This song is def a twin to "Unfair" (a song she has been quoted as saying is about falling in love with someone who is already in a relationship) so it is presumably about the same person. Given the references to buying an apartment and not being able to see her love interest "after tonight," it's most likely that she's moving away and she'll "wait a day to break the bad news" (i.e. notifying him that she's leaving once she's already gone). And, of course, the fact that she sees in him a fellow "idealist" and "dreamer" (terms commonly given to people with the INFP personality on the Myers–Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)) portends that she'll always be left wondering if they would've been perfect together.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
