You have my heart
And we'll never be worlds apart
Maybe in magazines
But you'll still be my star
Baby cause in the dark
You can't see shiny cars
And that's when you need me there
With you I'll always share

When there’s sunshine, we’ll shine together
Told you I'll be here forever
Said I'll always be a friend
Took an oath Imma stick it out till the end
Now that it's raining more than ever
Know that we'll still have each other
You can stand under my umbrella
You can stand under my umbrella ella ella eh eh eh
Under my umbrella ella ella eh eh eh eh eh eh

These fancy things, will never come in between
You're part of my entity, here for Infinity
When the war has took it's part
When the world has dealt it's cards
If the hand is hard, together we'll mend your heart
Because

When there’s sunshine, we’ll shine together
Told you I'll be here forever
Said I'll always be a friend
Took an oath Imma stick it out till the end
Now that it's raining more than ever
Know that we'll still have each other
You can stand under my umbrella
You can stand under my umbrella ella ella eh eh eh
Under my umbrella ella ella eh eh eh eh eh eh

You can run into my arms
It's okay don't be alarmed
Come with me
So go on and let the rain pour
I'll be all you need and more

When there’s sunshine, we’ll shine together
Told you I'll be here forever
Said I'll always be a friend
Took an oath Imma stick it out till the end
Now that it's raining more than ever
Know that we'll still have each other
You can stand under my umbrella
You can stand under my umbrella ella ella eh eh eh
Under my umbrella ella ella eh eh eh eh eh eh

Let the rain come down...

I love the fact that The Manics will fearlessly cover a song they like and feel they could put their own personal vibe on. I absolutely hated Rihanna's version of Umbrella, but I heard it a lot because my daughter and her friends would play it all the time. I remember listening to the words once and thinking that they were powerful, excellent lyrics that just happened to be in a terrible song and sung with no soul at all by a silly plastic pop star. Then one afternoon I heard the Manics version and it blew me away. I felt that they too had realised the power and beauty of the lyrics and had managed to make the song into a rousing, rock anthem with just a bit of tongue in cheek slap down of Rihanna. Like "see we took your song and made it good". The Manics version of the song is so good it's almost like its a different song. For me the Manics version of this song is the definitive version. They have such an eclectic taste, which is seen in the different songs they cover.

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
