I didn't think it was possible to screw up a ONE LINE song, but it's just "Head above water this year, boys." No "the". ANYWAY, this song is INCREDIBLE.

My guess would be that Mike Kennedy is a bad friend due to the statutory rape scandal, he had extramarital affairs and his wife divorced him.
