My name is Anne, I got a plan
I may lack virtue
But I'm penitent
Ah-ooooh
Ah-ooooh
To lose my mind
It's never easy
A shadow still
there's weight to me
Ah-ooooh
Ah-ooooh
J,j,jesus Pieces
Rescue me
the more I try
the more it gets too complicated
J,j,jesus pieces
Rescue me
The more I give up
The more it takes
The more it takes
My name is Anne, I'll take a stand
I'll hold my head up dig on in
Ah-oooooooh
You can bait me for the hell of it
I'll take it for the hell of it
See it there, but it's too far ahead
Go numb from how bad I want it
See it there but it's too far ahead
And I hear you calling to me right from here
J,j,jesus Pieces
Rescue me
the more I try
the more it gets too complicated
J,j,jesus pieces
Rescue me
The more I give up
The more it takes
The more it takes
I may lack virtue
But I'm penitent
Ah-ooooh
Ah-ooooh
To lose my mind
It's never easy
A shadow still
there's weight to me
Ah-ooooh
Ah-ooooh
Rescue me
the more I try
the more it gets too complicated
Rescue me
The more I give up
The more it takes
The more it takes

Definitely one of my favorite songs at the moment! Santogold is great, I'm so glad she is around. It wasn't until I was high one day I decided to look up the lyrics. The beat was captivating enough but I read lyrics and I was blown away. It's haunting and uplifting in the same way, I can relate a lot to "Anne." I love the line, "See it there, but it's too far ahead/Go numb from how bad I want it." It reminds of how the affects of drugs can make you indifferent, passive and numb in life. You need a rescuing hand when it gets rough even if you try your hardest, you can need someone or some higher being to help you out.
That's my take on the song, I would really love to know what inspired her to write this song, if Anne really exists and what is actually going on! Great song though, I truly love it!
So, as some people were wondering, what 'Jesus pieces' were supposed to mean; I think, she's referring to those https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesus_piece_(jewelry)
& regarding the name, I can only think of two Annes. (1) Anne, the mother of Mary & grandmother of Jesus. But then, I have zero knowledge of religion & I know nothing about her. (2) Anne Boleyn? The lines 'I may lack virtue, but I'm penitent' remind me of the speech she gave, before she was executed. She didn't defend herself or anything. However, I thought, the song was more like an autobiographical epilogue of the album? The 'Jesus pieces' are mostly worn in the hip hop community & therefore a symbol of music? & the song might be about her creative process & how her art consumes her?
(Oh & I love this song, btw. It's so haunting & beautiful.)
(I apologise for my horrible English. It's not my first language.)
Great song, I think it is about finding oneself. Love the beginning and pieces, and her vocals on: See it there, but it's too far ahead. Go numb from how bad I want it, See it there but it's too far ahead
a woman? struggling through problems? 'the more I try, the more it gets too complicated.' can't imagine what type of problems though.
i like how anne evaluates herself, y'know? 'I may lack virtue, But I'm penitent'
and i feel reallyrealyreally stupid for asking, but wtf does she mean by 'jesus pieces'? idgi. is she like, really talking about jesus, or something else?
I wouldn't even try to understand what it means. Either it is spiritually pure or it is spiritually dark. She's into Mythology and all kinds of different mixed up spirituality. She's into altered mind states, brainwave, metaphysics, new age. Picked that up in 1 second flat. In one of her videos she says music is power and one of the most powerful forces that exists. If you are knowledgeable - you would know that the angel of light demon was originally the angel of music & praise before he was cast down. Google it!

I think this song is either about Mary Magdelene or about someone who identifies with her. Her personae (patchwork from several figures) is both "penitent" (Saint Mary Magdeline) and "lacking virtue" (Mary Magdeline the prostitute).
I absolutely love this song. The first time I heard it, I didn't think much of it, but after a few listens I really got how hauntingly beautiful it is.
Honestly, to me it just feels like a woman trying to make it against seemingly insurmountable opposition. She's not the best person ever, and she could easily be overlooked, but she has substance. She's trying to accomplish something, but it keeps getting more complicated. She would love to be rescued from the situation, but I feel like she knows no one is going to do that for her, so she carries on. And I feel like "Jesus Pieces" must be sort of like some kind of exclamation. Like, "Jesus pieces! I stubbed my toe!" ...except not exactly.
I think "Jesus pieces" might refer to the host that they serve during the sacrament of Communion- in the Catholic Church the host is believed to literally be the flesh of Christ, or pieces of Jesus. I think this would fit in well with the bit about penitence- she's trying to redeem herself with religion.
"Jesus pieces" could either be a crucifix worn around the neck. So Anne is asking for solace from a religious artefact and putting her faith in a material object. It could also refer to a gun, in which case se will find solace from using the gun.
