Century Eyes Lyrics
you were not the first to arrive,
and will not be the last to survive,
as the pigs and the oxen we bound
to the wheel
tear it off, tear it off!
you are not the last of this house,
or the first to go over the side.
remember the wrecks of those elegant ships
"turn it off!
turn it off!"
no.
look with century eyes they make you go blind.
galloping into the void,
you are rolling your eyes like a horse,
all to turn form the beam,
from the eye of that screen.
"turn it off! turn it off!
with our backs to the arch
and the wreck of our kind,
we will stare straight ahead
for the rest of our lives!"
and will not be the last to survive,
as the pigs and the oxen we bound
to the wheel
tear it off, tear it off!
or the first to go over the side.
remember the wrecks of those elegant ships
"turn it off!
turn it off!"
no.
look with century eyes they make you go blind.
you are rolling your eyes like a horse,
all to turn form the beam,
from the eye of that screen.
"turn it off! turn it off!
with our backs to the arch
and the wreck of our kind,
we will stare straight ahead
for the rest of our lives!"

Maybe I'm the only one interpreting things this way, but the album really holds a sort of environmentalist, modern-day apocalypse feel that I really like. A lot of songs seem to deal with human destruction of each other and the environment, and how it will end us. ...Maybe.
To me, Century Eyes sounds like a song mocking how we fall in love with our extravagant technologies...I especially get feelings of the Titanic and luxury liners from the second paragraph, and of our obsession with television in the third.
Anyway, this song is practically punk rock in that it makes me want to hop around and break things...which just might be its aim.
