Medicine Wheel Lyrics
The day you left and you called me "bitch"
I called you selfish; better pull that switch
Put my son on amphetamines
He came home crying, and there's your proof
Crying 'bout nothing but a missing tooth
I did the right thing
You shade the truth almost every day
Phone calls at night, it's gonna be okay
Are you signing, baby
Under the bridge?
Are you signing, baby
On Lake Street?
Black marker on cardboard
Little drawing of a medicine wheel
Well, everything that's given, you steal
Everything that's given, you steal
Maybe you'll wake up in jail alone
And hold the handle of the one pay phone
And do the right thing
Like I once tried, though I bent the truth
A five-dollar debt for a little lost tooth
There's the payback in front of me
'Cause once you were like a walking heart
Breaking in motion through the parking lot
Are you signing, baby
Under the bridge?
Are you signing, baby
On Lake Street?
Black marker on cardboard
Little drawing of a medicine wheel
And everything that's given, you steal
Everything that's given, you steal
Words of encouragement are just as real
Same effect as a smooth blue pill
Are you signing, baby
Under the bridge?
Are you signing, baby
On Lake Street?
Black marker on cardboard
Little drawing of a medicine wheel
Everything that's given, you steal
Everything that's given, you steal

It's "Are you signing," not "are you saddened."
Actually, these lyrics are all kinds of wrong. The correct lyrics are:
The day you left and you called me "bitch" I called you selfish; better pull that switch Put my son on amphetamines He came home crying, and there's your proof Crying 'bout nothing but a missing tooth I did the right thing
You shade the truth almost every day Phone calls at night, it's gonna be okay

I think the song is about two people. The ex-husband and the son.
The part about the son coming home crying I think is about after putting him on the drugs. The father was giving her flak about drugs and saying "look, he came home crying! Proof that the drugs are bad for him", when he was only crying because a tooth got knocked out.
The part about the person on the street holding a sign of a Medicine Wheel must be about the father. It would make sense that he doesn't agree with drugs and prefers herbal stuff. I had wondered at first if it was about someone begging for money on the street using a Native American symbol, and that's why "anything that's given to him, he stole" because it was some kind of hustle. But that is just a passing speculation I had.
There's a part about being out $5 for Tooth Fairy money, and how it's made up to her by seeing the husband ruined.
I could see "Words of encouragement are just as real" going either way. Either literal, or else mocking sarcastically. It's a difficult song to crack.
I always thought it was about a mother whose son is homeless and an addict, and she is is blaming herself, wondering if she should have engaged with him more as a child, rather than just putting him on ritalin (or whatever).
I think it's a mother addressing her drugged-out ex, who is reduced to holding up a cardboard sign and panhandling under a bridge. She's upset because the bastard is corrupting their son now. But I'm not real sure about any of that. It's not Aimee's most obvious song. Anyone?
Not even but nice try I'd go on a limb and say it is without a doubt
about her son being prescribed with Ridalin, concerta, adderall
dexarin something of that nature a stimulant. After pressured by a
doctor or guardian whom insist she "put her son on amphetamines" to
treat he's a.d.d.,they give the "smooth blue pills a try".However
after she sees he has becoming overly sensitive as a result of
prescript treatment "crying bout nothing but a little lost tooth" She
decides to pull him off the drug. Though the other party trys to
"shade the true almost everynight" even "call[ing her] a bitch" for
her decison to seek alternative treament for her son. Aimee is
confident "did the right thing" for her son.
Encouraging a child is just as effective as drugging them and your a selfish piece of shit who doesn't love your kid if you see that and still choose the lather approach in treating your child hyper activity/lack of attention know as natural human behavior that is what s meant by " Words of encouragement are just as real Same effect as a smooth blue pill"
