Kids Don't Know Shit Lyrics

Lungs love holes
escaping words you know
smoke gets in your eyes
still blowing in the wind
and we can't beat this cancer, can we?
answer me
kids don't know shit
everything they've learned is wrong
boys in the neighborhood are fit,
'cause they fight all night long
kids don't know it, but everyhing they've touched is gone
'cause no one understands,
you can't stand under something that's all wrong
when you're facing the day
when you're wasting away
& you get lighter than your brain
& it grows tighter everyday
love's lungs hold air to blow a hole
cold chest grows, fills up with smoke
at least your head is warm
still forming ways to warm the baby's bed
'cause kids don't know shit
everything they've learned is wrong
the girls on the block are listening in
they sing "let's get strong"
kids don't know it, but everything they've got is gone
we used it for some fuel and food
then the rats took it from us and made a bomb
words love holes
getting lost in lies we know
still believing branches weaving forests
leaving helps them grow
kids don't know shit
everything we learned was wrong
deep down we knew it,
we always knew it all along
nebular splendor, I'll remember those constellations forever
a cursory person turns to me and says
"well, you won't live forever"

such a good song, one of my favorites from Arm's Way. the message i get from this is about dying young, smoking lungs, and knowing everything you knew growing up was wrong. but its just a good song to sing along so have fun and stay strong is my motto.

Also one of my favorites from the album. Its apparent to me that there is a double meaning however.

More literally, its about kids being dumb, smoking, fighting, and being taught the wrong information.

I believe that really the song is discussing the end of finite resources. Most obviously the lines:

"kids don't know it, but everything they've got is gone we used it for some fuel and food then the rats took it from us and made a bomb"

discuss how young kids don't realize that when they're older this visage of comfortable living will be gone when resources run out, and blaming our usage of fuel and food and the governments (rats) expenditure on weapons.

The smoke referenced so frequently is a metaphore as in either "everythings going up in smoke" or the smoke being the by product of resources burning away.

He sings that what we've learned is lies, and even though we knew they were lies, we believe them anyway because we don't want to have to face the truth that our natural resources are becoming scarcer every day and soon will be completely gone.

Finally in the line: "and we can't beat this cancer, can we?" the word cancer represents the problem of our need of finite resources and our inability to overcome that need.

Bravo!

I think this is about schools/governments teaching all the kids shit, bullshit, stuff that's bad for 'em, and like stuff in school about science means nothing, and all this enviroment stuff means nothing because they're taking it all away, anyways. Or something like that.

Overall for me it's about waking from realizing that everything we have been told and understood as reality is only the surface.

nebular splendor, I'll remember those constellations forever a cursory person turns to me and says "well, you won't live forever"
