I love the symbolism they used in this song, in all their songs for that matter. But this one is definitely one of my favorites.

I think this song is about what a strange, crazy but yet beautiful world it can be sometimes as it is expressed in the chorus. The different kind of birds are to describe different kind of people in your life. Vultures and blackbirds that prey on you, they hurt you (bring you down) and take everything from you (as they clean you to the bone). Songbirds to me are the people we love (sever your heartstrings) but end up bringing you a lot of hurt (bitter melodies/light upon the trees). With firebird I think she means phoenix, a bird that dies by going up in flames and turns to ashes and from that ashes a new bird arises. The phoenix is the 'I' persona in this song. No matter how low she gets she's not gonna give up. (today you see me crash and burn but I'll be back tomorrow)
