Red Heart Lyrics

were you born in water,
a fish so cold?
were you born in autumn,
as the river froze?
cause you shut up
and you're shut in
and i know that
you've got your reasons
but even still, listen:
honey, let your red heart show

won't you? won't you? can't you?

were you born a closed book,
full of secret lines? (and bound so tight)
or did you learn to lock it,
as not to break your spine? (oh! you were bound so tight)
cause you shut up
and you're all shut inside
and i wanted to get you smiling
and maybe once in awhile you could try
and maybe let your red heart show

come on

won't you let your red heart show?
won't you let your red heart show?
don't you let your red heart go cold
don't you let your red heart go cold
we were given so much and we let it go
we were given so much and we're getting old
we were promised so much but we let it go
we were promised so much and it's going i know
but you look so good when you're laughing you know
yeah you know you look so good when you let it show
honey you look so good when you're laughing

(oh!)

I think that this song is about someone that Tim may have known that became very different, and that he grew to like, or even love, this person for the person they were when they met, but for some reason the person has become less genuine, less themselves, and this is his plea to return to being the person they were

Song is awesome, band is awesome. I am really starting to like the music coming form the great white north.

When I think of this song, it reminds me of this old game I used to play, Luigi's Mansion, where to get the ghosts, you had to stun them, so their (red) heart showed, so you could destroy them.

Take that as deeply as you will.

{ We were given so much and we let it go We were given so much and we're getting old We were promised so much but we let it go We were promised so much and it's going I know But you look so good when you're laughing you know }

This is part is about growing up- sort of a recurring theme in this song (what with the 'were you born this way?', or, were you made this way by the world?)

We had hope; we lost it. We let it go. Remember when we were innocent and carefree, laughing and smiling? Yeah? Good.

My Opinion

This song reminds me of my boyfriend. When we first met he was a closed book. Sometimes when we were dating he would let me through but other times he would shut the world out and not believe me when I told him he's amazing. Over time as I begged him to let me in and talk to me, he began to, slowly. So I can relate to the lyrics in this song-

And you're all shut inside And I wanted to get you smiling And maybe once in awhile you could try And maybe let your red heart show ... Won't you let your red heart show? Don't you let your red heart go cold

I wanted him to be himself and let his squishy, lovable, red heart show. And he definitely looks amazing when he's smiling and laughing :)
