Green Green Grass Of Home Lyrics
The old home town looks the same as I step down from the train,
and there to meet me is my Mama and Papa.
Down the road I look and there runs Mary, hair of gold and lips like cherries.
It's good to touch the green, green grass of home.
Yes, they'll all come to meet me, arms reaching, smiling sweetly.
It's good to touch the green, green grass of home.
The old house is still standing tho' the paint is cracked and dry,
and there's that old oak tree I used to play on.
Down the lane I walk with my sweet Mary, hair of gold and lips like cherries.
It's good to touch the green, green grass of home.
[spoken:]
Then I awake and look around me, at four grey walls that surround me
and I realize, yes, that I was only dreaming.
For there's a guard and there's a sad old padre -
arm in arm we'll walk at daybreak.
Again I touch the green, green grass of home.
Yes, they'll all come to see me in the shade of that old oak tree
as they lay me neath the green, green grass of home.
and there to meet me is my Mama and Papa.
It's good to touch the green, green grass of home.
and I realize, yes, that I was only dreaming.
For there's a guard and there's a sad old padre -
arm in arm we'll walk at daybreak.
Again I touch the green, green grass of home.
Yes, they'll all come to see me in the shade of that old oak tree
as they lay me neath the green, green grass of home.

it's about a guy awaiting execution, who dreams about his hometown, his family, friends, his girl, etc.
My main problem with this song is, who gets a good night's sleep the night before he or she is executed? So you suffer no fear and anxiety the night before your impending doom, and make sure to get a good rest before they kill you?
It's about a man coming back from the war . He gets off and sees that his hometown is still the same, his family's there to greet him and welcome him home . He sees his home and the tree he used to play on as a child . Then he says he wakes up and sees that he's surrounded by four grey walls, his coffin . He finds out it was only a dream . The people that gathered to see him , they are there for his funeral as they bury him beneath the green green grass of home .
