Liar Lyrics

I know that things are broken
And though there's too many words left unsaid
You say you have spoken
Like the coward I am, I hang my head
And you lay careless your head on my chest
And don't even look at me looking my best
And all these things I can't describe
You would rather I didn't try
But please don't cry, you liar
Oh please, don't cry, you liar
They told me love was a fortress
And I had never put it to the test
And all the while I relied on this honesty
Well in love we are all amateurs at best
But please don't cry, you liar
Oh please, don't cry, you liar
Oh please, don't cry, you liar
Oh please, don't cry, you liar
You're leaving for your last kiss
And who in this world could ask me to resist
Your hands cold as they find my neck
All this love that I've found I detest

The opening line "I know that things are broken". This to me, means he desperately in love with the girl. He is hanging on blindly to what he thinks of as love despite knowing its not right.

We can tell that she has cheated or betrayed him in some way from the lyric "and all the while I relied on this honesty".

She knows that he loves her and teased him by leaning in for her last kiss. He cannot resist because he is so in love with her. I love the subtle metaphor "cold hands". She is cold and heartless.

This song reminds me of a time when I felt the exact same way. Her crying and wanting me back and not being able to resist and giving in cowardly. The feeling was all to familiar for those months it took to break up.

I had the same experience. For the majority of an 8 month relationship, me and an ex boyfriend were breaking up and getting back together. He put a huge amount of stress onto me. He cheated on me with a girl I knew as a childhood best friend, and at the same time kept his sexuality to himself. I still don't know what he classifies himself as, but I know he went behind my back about it and had many men that he talked to. The part that hurt the most, is he'd get under my skin by telling me that he loved me so...

I think the bit about "and all the while I relied on this honesty" doesn't even have to be about something as big as cheating. could even be just the love she claims to have

Pretty much whatever you think could have been a lie probably was one

This is how I see it, what it means to me. Because I've been through something similar to this.

"I know that things are broken And though there's too many words left unsaid You say you have spoken Like the coward I am, I hang my head"

he says that there are too many words left unsaid, because there's things that he wishes he could say to change the girl's mind. but the girl has already spoken, and she doesn't want to hear anything more. and like the coward that he is, he shuts up and gives up.

"And you lay careless your head on my chest And don't even look at me looking my best And all these things I can't describe You would rather I didn't try"

the girl doesn't notice that he's looking his best for her, the girl doesn't seem to care. and all of the things that he wants to say, but doesn't know how to she rather him not say anything or try to fix things.

"But please don't cry, you liar Oh please, don't cry, you liar"

the girl is crying because she does care, and she feels really bad about leaving him and about what she's doing but she just can't love him. or stay with him. and he sings it like he's angry, and he doesn't believe that the girl cares or loves him because she's leaving, so he calls her a liar.

"They told me love was a fortress And I had never put it to the test And all the while I relied on this honesty Well in love we are all amateurs at best But please don't cry, you liar Oh please, don't cry, you liar Oh please, don't cry, you liar Oh please, don't cry, you liar"

and the stories that everyone kept telling him about love, about how it supports you and protects you and feels amazing and that he doesn't know it because he's never tried it he believed those stories and believed that it was his fault that relationships never worked so he gave his all to this girl and after this he realized that no one is an expert at love and he can't change the fact that she's leaving.

"And you lean in for your last kiss* And who in this world could ask me to resist Your hands cold as they find my neck All this love that I've found I detest"

she wants a last kiss, and no one in this world could ever get him to resist because he wants and loves this girl so much. and her hands cold, (i didn't see it as she was heartless, i just thought this is how her hands felt when she touched him) and all the love that he felt in his heart for her, he started to hate it and wish he never felt it. and he feels sick to feel it.

  • At least that's how I would feel -
My Interpretation

I feel as if her "hands being cold and as they find my neck" means that its as if she is dead to him because it is an empty feeling.

yeah i like that thought

I don't think it's necessarily about cheating, I think maybe it's just a relationship that isn't working and he's calling her a liar because she promised him she would always love him. He detests the love because he thought it could never end. I don't know, just a thought

And you LEAN IN for your last kiss

The obvious connotations of this song are about rejection, betrayal, and a broken heart, but after listening to it recently I came up with a new angle on it. I think the singer's girl is dying.

"You lay careless, your head on my chest" and "You lean in for your last kiss" make me think of death. "I know things are broken" sounds like it could be referring to the relationship, but it could also be an allusion to a failing body. I think the main point that gives me this impression is that the singer seems bitter about whatever's gone wrong, but not angry at the subject of the lyrics. "You liar" in the chorus could be a reflection of his pain and denial at her death, a response to something like "Things will be okay" or "You have to move on when I'm gone" or something related.

I think I might just be thinking this because I recently watched The Fountain again. But anyways, there it is.

Honestly, I can only go on what this song makes me feel he is saying, but its like the person he loves is telling him she was unfaithful to him, and she begins to cry... the singer is almost disgusted by this, she was the one that wronged him and not she is crying, its almost unfair. (The way he says "you liar" is why I think this.)

I picture a man hopelessly in love, knowing his relationship is on thin ice,so he dresses up and organizes a thoughtful date, but she just cant keep leading him on, so she breaks it off and even tells him shes already cheated...and as she does she cries and feels bad but he obviously doesn't believe her tears...because of how she's hurt him. I can't quite put my mental movie into words....but it's an awesome mental movie lol. Sad/ beautiful song!

I think its "you lean in for your last kiss"

Although it does seem that this song is about a significant other cheating, I think it's something a little less drastic. I believe she ends things with him and she's careless about it. He is completely in love with this girl, and though she claims she feels the same, she clearly does not, considering she's ending the relationship. Which is why I think when he sings: "But please don't cry, you liar." She acts as though she's devastated breaking things off, but really, she's just guilty for her lack of love in returning. His words to her are comforting, yet, truthfully harsh: "Please don't cry, you liar." I think he's also numb to her, and that perhaps he seen it coming.
