Moon River Lyrics

Moon River,
Wider than a mile:
I'm crossin' you in style
Some day.
Old dream maker,
You heart breaker,
Wherever your goin',
I'm goin' your way:
Two drifters,
Off to see the world,
There's such a lot of world
To see.
We're after the same
Rainbow's end
Waitin' round the bend,
My huckleberry friend,
Moon River
and me.

Audrey Hepburn's character (Holly Golightly) in 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' is, for most of the movie, searching for wealth, status, and material gain. However, the character turns out to have a deeper personality, and is in fact searching for herself. She is a very lonely person.

I feel that this song illustrates her quest for her dream life, in a way. She actually admits in the movie that she doesn't know what she wants yet, and she is singing about trying to find it in the song. Moon River is the hypothetical path to that dream life she seeks.

'Wider than a mile' explains how she finds it difficult to cross that river to a place where she knows and has what she wants, she knows who she is. 'I'm crossing you in style' could reference her socialite lifestyle. 'Some day' means she hasn't found what she is looking for yet. 'You heartbreaker' explains how she has been let down as she makes her way. 'Wherever you're goin'/I'm goin' your way' is a way of saying that she will never give up, and will keep trying to, hypothetically, cross that river.

The second verse, to me, seems to show that the singer is lonely (as Holly Golightly is) and is searching for a companion, someone to go through life with her.

My Interpretation

@larkin5141 Great interpretation. A girl friend sent me this song and thought not only because it sounds nice and therefore I'd tried to find out what's behind. Your interpretation will help to ask the right questions. Many thanks.
