Enemies Lyrics
I've done hell to my safe holding
I've held my blood in such low standing
I blame these sad things on me
Cut a smile in my face so you'll intake some fleeting comfort
Close in
Contaminate your world with my touch
But you brandish the weapon of passive aggression
It seems like your idea of perfect
And mine are perfectly in line
So let's be enemies
To see the sun go away
Would you think I'd let you in?
I've grown to suffer you lashing out at me
To see the sun go away
Don't deny my tolerance
Don't take away these sad things from me
And that ain't nothing
You should see what I'd do to me
Cut a smile in my face so you'll intake some fleeting comfort
You've built a wall of beauty to help tolerate any discomfort
From...
Your idea of perfect
And mine are perfectly in line
So let's be enemies
To see the sun go away
Would you think I'd let you in?
I've grown to suffer you lashing out at me
I will stand alone
Your idea of perfect
And mine are perfectly in line
So let's be enemies
To see the sun go away
My idea, unless you're blind is
Having you far away
I've held my blood in such low standing
I blame these sad things on me
But you brandish the weapon of passive aggression
And mine are perfectly in line
So let's be enemies
To see the sun go away
I've grown to suffer you lashing out at me
To see the sun go away
Don't take away these sad things from me
And that ain't nothing
You should see what I'd do to me
You've built a wall of beauty to help tolerate any discomfort
And mine are perfectly in line
So let's be enemies
To see the sun go away
I've grown to suffer you lashing out at me
I will stand alone
And mine are perfectly in line
So let's be enemies
To see the sun go away
Having you far away

I've looked online at a lot of places for lyrics to this song, because I believe what I hear is different from what I read. To me, it sounds like he's saying "contaminate your world with my touch" and during the chorus it sounds like Billy is saying "Your idea of perfect and mine aren't perfectly in line so let's be enemies."
Maybe I'm crazy, but I feel like that's what he's saying, among other things.
It bewilders me that people thought the lyrics were:

Cool song, one of the best on their album, although I'd love to hear how it'd sound with Maynard on vocals...
it seems like its a couple that hate each other(im perfect, your perfect, lets be enemies) but cant stand the thought of being alone (you should see what id do to me) so they stay together (see the sun go away) just my 1st impression.
I agree with Geeeoff. Also, should'nt it be "Cut a smile in my face so real it takes some fleeting comfort?" He's got a very unique vocal style and everything, but I can clearly make out the word "real" not "you'll." "So you'll intake some fleeting comfort" makes no sense at all.
In my opinion, either form of the lyrics makes sense. To me, "Cut a smile in my face/So you'll intake some fleeting comfort" indicates that the speaker ("my") wears a mask to spare others ("you'll") from discomfort. However, I couldn't say which one is right, and your version makes sense to me as well. As long as one gets a clear message across, I think we'll be alright.

A fair bit of these lyrics is completely wrong. This is my corrected version - still not completely sure about that last line, but the rest of it is pretty much right.

I've always heard it as "Your idea of perfect and mine are perfectly in line so let's be enemies".
I tend to misunderstand everyone and everything I hear so...
